I owe an enormous amount of gratitude to our volunteers who came out today and helped plant 400 Strawberries plugs at the 5th Avenue Community Garden. This year, we are growing Camarosa and Chandler varieties in our raised garden boxes and in-ground zones. ---------- Planting Strawberry Plugs in October are the best way to get the sweetest and largest strawberries available in Spring. There is nothing better than going to a strawberry patch and picking them fresh in season. ... ---------- Chandler strawberries produces a large delicious berry that is sure to please your family! The interior of the fruit features red coloring and plenty of juice. If you don’t like the dry and white centers found in other strawberries, Chandler fruits could quickly become your favorite. ---------- Camarosa is one of the most common varieties of strawberry grown. It produces a big yield of berries, and the berries are large with good form and stand up well to storage and shipping. They have a wonderful sweet flavor too. Expect to be able to harvest Camarosa berries a little earlier than other varieties you have tried. ---------- Strawberries are becoming one of my favorite plants for school gardens/community gardens/neighborhood farms. You plant it in October and begin harvesting fresh berries the following Spring. I've harvested strawberries as early as the end of February before. See more

Changing our communities one seed at a time. At the end of August, we started seeds of fall crops in the Monroe High Greenhouse. We grew kale, broccoli, cabbage, and collards. They'll be ready for planting at community garden sites in a couple of days. We will donated the harvest from these sites to hunger relief organizations such as Feeding the Valley for their Holiday Giveaway. If you have free space at your home, job, school, church, community center, and public parks,... please reach out to us about how we can work together to use those spaces to grow food for your community. Partnerships Matters!!! --- This year, Flint River Fresh has developed a relationship with Feeding the Valley Albany in the recruitment of volunteers (individuals and organizations) for helping out with our Fresh Community Urban Farms (FCUF) project. This project is designed to treat our community gardens across the city as one urban farm where we grow produce to support hunger relief organizations in our city and work alongside our neighbors for a healthier community. Yeste...rday we hosted our first volunteer day with this partnership at the 5th Avenue Community Garden. --- Also working along side Albany Recreation and Parks Department, we harvested 476 pounds of sweet potatoes from the community gardens at 4C Academy and 5th Avenue site and donated it to Feeding the Valley. This is enough sweet potatoes for 395 meals which could feed 90 to 100 families. This yield came from 480 square feet of garden space (20 ft by 24 ft) --- Can you imagine how many families we can be fed with your help? We are in this together. See more

We’re kicking off the Sunbelt Ag Expo’s Backyard Gardening blog series by putting into practice what we are talking about in the post. Selecting what to plant in your fall garden. Today, Colquitt County FFA students planted collards and broccoli in the backyard demonstration site.
