It's Volunteer Appreciation Week, the time each year when we pause to acknowledge the tremendous impact made by members of our community who never ask for recog...nition or reward. This year's Volunteer Appreciation Week feels especially significant and sentimental for us, as we reflect on what our volunteers mean to us and all that they made possible during some of the most difficult times in recent memory. A little over one year ago, our volunteers were as frightened as we were and uncertain about the future. Despite all the personal difficulties they may have faced, our volunteers still made time for the animals. They checked on us, helped deliver goods and services to needy families and pets, opened their homes to foster our animals, made sure animals received medical care, and helped our team in any way we asked without a moment's hesitation. The Atlanta Humane Society is a great and giving organization because we are inspired and supported by a great and giving community, and because of our volunteers, we can continue to make a difference in this community we love so much. Please join us in thanking the hundreds of volunteers who make our lifesaving work possible.

The Atlanta Police Department, City of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, and City of Atlanta Department of Corrections Department came together last Friday to hon...or the life and legacy of Chief George Napper who passed away on October 2, 2020. Chief Napper was Atlanta’s first African American Chief. He was a trailblazer at APD, responsible for creating many of the units and departmental structures that exist today such as the Field Investigation Teams (FIT), Major Fraud Unit, and the Special Investigations Unit. He also changed the structure of the department’s zones from 4 to 6 and prioritized calls for service classifications. Chief Napper was at the helm during the Atlanta missing and murdered children investigations between 1979 and 1981. In 1981, a special task force was formed-comprised of several police agencies, including the GBI, sheriff departments and the Fulton County DA’s office. In 1982, an arrest was made in the case of the missing and murdered children giving the APD national exposure. George Napper, a native of Auburn, California, earned a Ph.D. degree in criminology from the University of California at Berkeley. George Napper, while a professor at Spelman College, was recruited by the Director of Public Safety, Reginald Eaves, as the head of the Career Development Program. He was appointed as the Director/Chief of Atlanta Police Services in 1978. Chief Napper became the first African American to hold the position in Atlanta. In 1982, Chief Napper was named the new Director of Public Safety under the leadership of Mayor Andrew Young. Director Napper appointed Morris G. Redding as Chief and Beverly Harvard as Deputy Chief. Chief Napper was a distinguished professor and academician, as well as one of the founders of the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). Thank you for your contributions to the Atlanta Police Department and our community Chief Napper. You will be truly missed.
