In recognition of #WorldRefugeeDay, read a story on an UMCOR partnership with CWS in Bosnia-Herzegovina that offers a caring presence and dignified shelter to migrating teens living in makeshift encampments.

The church has given me hope for life, said Kavira Mwavita, a now-homeless mother of three children who lost her husband to the increasing violence in East Congo. In response to the urgent needs of thousands of displaced people who have sought refuge away from the violence, UMCOR distributed food and hygiene items to more than 850 households in Beni this May. What joy a cooking pot can bring! Nearly 1,000 people in the Mitwaba district of North Katanga, DRC have received much-needed relief supplies after heavy rain and severe, ongoing flooding has destroyed belongings and displaced families from their homes. Items like pots, plates and spoons and oil, flour and beans are helping 110 households become more resilient in the wake of disaster.

Conference Disaster Response Teams in the Western Jurisdiction have been listening to survivors, building and distributing ash-sifting kits and wildfire buckets, and giving out UMCOR school, hygiene, and cleaning bucket kits throughout the long, hot wildfire season. Enduring Hurricanes Laura and Delta within the span of six weeks has shaken southwest Louisiana. The road to recovery is long, but care and compassion is being embodied through support from UMCOR and United Methodists across the country.

UMCOR is in communication with partners in Mexico and the U.S. in response to Hurricane Delta, namely the hard-hit state of Louisiana that endured Hurricane Laura only six weeks ago. The storm’s strong winds and heavy rain have left many without power and caused widespread flooding. Damage assessments that began over the weekend will continue into this week, with the tarping of roofs and mucking out of homes serving as initial relief.
