This very practice itself is called concentration: the mind running, your bringing it back; its running, your bringing it back. You are taming a monkey. Once it’s tamed, it will just listen to you. You will be able to say, Okay, sit there quietly. And it will. At that point you are meditating. Until then you are training yourself to meditate. Training your mind to meditate is what is called dhra. Satya as a practice of being truthful is more than just making sure the things we say to ourselves and others are true. Practicing Satya is living with integrity, to be grounded in the truth, so much so that, as Sri Aurobindo says in Savitri, "The Truth shall be the leader of [our] lives." This happens on a variety of levels: through our thoughts, our words, our actions, and even our physical alignment. Living Satya means that you are consistently turning away from falsehood, you are always pursuing a higher level of truth, you are willing to acknowledge that you might be wrong, and you have the ability to let go of old, out-dated, even false beliefs to accept the new level of truth that is staring you in the face. The pursuit of truth along with the cultivation of beauty is the heartfelt mission of Sri Aurobindo's yoga.

The Yama and Niyama were first codified in The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. Together, they make up the first two limbs of the Ashtanga Path. The Yama and Niyama are not to be dismissed, even though there is a lot of yoga asana happening in the West that rarely touches on the ethical code of conduct described by the Yama and Niyama. According to Patanjali, yoga must honor these values to be yoga. You can't just stretch your body and call it yoga. Yoga that is only movement isn't t...ruly yoga. The first of the Yama is Ahimsa, which is our focus for the month of January. Ahimsa is often translated as non-violence, non-harming, kindness, compassion, or care. The practice of Ahimsa applies to all things: our selves, others, the planet even perhaps inanimate objects as it holds at its core the practice of showing respect and love in our relationships and interactions. Practice Ahimsa this month in a variety of modes. Treat your body with compassion in asana practice by exploring poses with feeling, not force. Notice the messages you internalize about your body as you practice. Are they compassionate or judgmental? Observe the way you speak. Pause before speaking to formulate your words with care so that you speak truthfully but with kindness whether speaking to others or yourself. Let go of hostility, violence, and defensiveness. Notice even your reaction to that sentence. What does it bring up in you?
