Restoration of Fort McAllister, Part I: 1925 was a year that changed the course of history for Richmond Hill, including Fort McAllister. It was the year that a...utomobile industrialist Henry Ford began purchasing mass amounts of land in our county - eventually owning 85,000 acres. About ten years later, Ford turned his attention to the fort- which had been long forgotten since the Civil War. Former office manager of the Ford operations, R. P. Thompson recalled in a 1951 interview: "One of the most interesting things Mr. Ford did at the Richmond Hill Plantation was the restoration of Fort McAllister. He had heard there was a fort located down that way. He probed and hunted. I understand that in his own probings he found it. Either Mr. Ford discovered it or a boy by the name of Wilbur Donaldson. It was an underground fort with caves and passages dug underneath an abutment there... we restored it. Some of the timbers that went in there would bring a fortune today. There were 14 x 14s, twenty and twenty-five feet long. You just couldn't get them today." This photo, taken in 1935, shows the young Will Donaldson and Henry Ford looking at the buried hot shot furnace.

Once again, Fort McAllister Marina and Fish Tales in Richmond Hill put on a quite a show. Happy Labor Day Neighbors!
As we all know 2020 has been a tough year. We think our community needs a little fun! After much deliberation, we have decided to continue our 10 year tradition...! With Safety in Mind, the causeway will be a great place to park and watch the show with the family from your car, if you choose to watch from the Marina, we ask that you practice social distancing and wear a mask. In addition, we’ll have BC Deputies on site to help with traffic safety. Fort McAllister State Historic Park is another great place to watch. The park requires only a $5.00 per car fee and it’s another great place for an evening Picnic with the family. Of course, if you have a boat, the water is an excellent place to safely view the show. This is our way of giving back to the community that has supported us in so many ways over the years - we thank you and hope you enjoy the show!! Special Thanks to the folks at Southern Eagle GA for making this possible, they’ll be there with plenty of swag. See more
