#COVID_19 R E A D I N E S S Today marks the 29th day since the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations were given to members of the 165th Airlift Wing here in Savannah, Ga. Dozens of #Airmen from throughout the wing, including the Wing Staff Leadership team, returned to the 165th Medical Group Feb. 17, 2021 to receive their second shot of the vaccine series now that their 28-day waiting period has passed. ... U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Tiffany Sneeze ,165th MDG, and Tech. Sgt. James Koch, from the 116th Air Control Wing Medical Group, were the aerospace medics administering the vaccines today. For some of us working in the medical group, providing this new vaccine to our members is something we see as exciting since it is the first vaccine of its kind, said Koch. The first Covid-19 shots were given Jan. 21 here at the 165th AW and since then the medical group has administered over 500 vaccinations, said Sneeze. The wing commander, Col. Chris Dunlap, along with his wing staff team including vice commander, Col. David Smith, the chief of staff, Col. Ryan Hampton, & the executive officer, 1st. Lt. U.S. Air Force Col. Steve Poulos, 165th Maintenance Group commander, was a guest speaker at Benedictine Military on December 7, 2020 to honor one of the first Soldiers to lose their life during the attack on Pearl Harbor, George Gannam. Gannam was originally from the Savannah, Georgia area and is now honored each year with a memorial service at Benedictine Military on what they call Gannam Day, which is nationally recognized as National Pearl Harbor Remeberance Day. Remembering Pearl Harbor This year marks the 79th anniversary commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the subsequent entry of the United States into World War II. Killed in the attack were 2,403 U.S. personnel, including 68 civilians.

Yesterday, our Firefighters participated in a mass casualty exercise in conjunction with Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, and Savannah Fire Departments, Chatham Emergency services, and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Training like this is essential to maintain cross-agency coordination in the event of a crisis situation.

Today is the last day of #HispanicHeritageMonth and we're highlighting Staff Sgt. Leilani Aiken from the 117th Air Control Squadron. Aiken said one of her favorite parts of serving, "is the lasting friendships" created through the military. Aiken said she joined the military to serve with her father.

For World Teacher Day we’re celebrating our Vice Wing Commander, Col. David Smith. Col Smith began his career 26 years ago as an educator in the Effingham County School System. Throughout his career he has served in various positions to include classroom teacher (STEM), middle school and high school athletic coach, and school administrator at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Col Smith began his military career a few months prior to starting his career i...n education. He enlisted in the Security Forces career field, and later earned his commission as a Personnel Officer. Additional positions held include: Commander of Security Forces Squadron, Commander of Force Support Squadron, Inspector General, Deputy Mission Support Group Commander, various staff officer positions at the Wing and Joint Forces Headquarters, and now as the Vice Commander of the 165th Airlift Wing.
