To Our Valued Practice Members, Thank you for your support in following procedures as we have reopened the office. We have been able to increase our volume while keeping things safe, sanitized, and as socially distanced as humanly possible. In these times of stress, it's very helpful to take care of your nervous system. If we can help any of your family or friends, let them and us know, and we'll have a special discount for anyone you refer. We look forward to seeing you soon! Chapter 3 - Exercise In our first two installments we discussed Family and Diet/Nutrition. In the same way this COVID downtime has presented an opportunity for families to come together and the time for us to improve our nutrition, we now have the free time to begin (or continue) a regimen of exercise. Gyms have been closed, but there are many exercise options available for everyone. For over thirty years, patient's have asked me "what is the best exercise?" The answer is "th...e one you are willing to do." No matter what I or some fitness guru suggest, if you won't do it, it's not going to help you. If you're not doing anything, start walking. Research shows if you can take a brisk 40 minute walk (approximately 2 miles), five times a week, that lowers your risk of a heart attack by 80%! Research also shows that sunshine builds your immune system and kills COVID virus. So if possible, all of us need to spend time outside, in the sunshine, preferably walking, running or playing ball! Now with social distancing and fear of contamination, team sports are prohibited. Public tennis courts are locked up because players handle the same ball. Golf is a perfect choice (if you have the opportunity) with plenty of walking, sunshine, and social distancing. And everybody has their own ball! Staying indoors offers numerous exercise options as well. Sales of Peloton stationary bikes and NordicTrack rising treadmills (both offer instruction online) are way up. If you have some space, and a couple of thousand dollars, you're in business. Other internet options include a multitude of workout routines, some need dumbbells or pull-up bars, many are solely body weight. For those looking for a gentle approach, Tai-Chi is a great choice, if you don't mind doing something that originated in China! Yoga is one of my favorites. It involves strength, flexibility, cardio, and balance. Some routines are basic, others take years to master. There are thousands of free YouTube videos to choose from. Whatever is is, pick something and start MOVING!

Chapter 2 - Nutrition/Diet "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." - A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens Last week I wrote about family, and how being locked away with your spouse and children could be wonderful - or a nightmare. The same can be said about nutrition and diet. With more time on our hands than ever before, few people have the excuse, "I have no time to shop or cook, so I eat fast food." Now, nearly all of us have time, lots of time. So if your ...New Year's resolution to eat healthy or lose weight wasn't going so well, now's your chance! While going to the supermarket may be scary for some people, there are many opportunities to get delivery or pick-up. There are a variety of services that provide pre-made frozen meals you can microwave or fresh ingredients you can cook and assemble. The Huppert family has tried a week of Freshly (microwaveable) and is now eating Sun Basket (fresh, pre-measured). These meals are organic, tasty, and not too expensive (approximately $8-$11/per serving). If you need to lose weight, this might be a good time to try Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, or Quick Weight Loss. While these options may not be gourmet cuisine, they're certainly edible and effective. The best option is to purchase fresh, organic ingredients and make delicious, homemade meals from scratch. If you don't know how to cook, the internet is full of recipes and YouTube videos showing you how to make anything your heart desires. Great meals do require equipment, planning, skill, ingredients and time - but now is the time you've been waiting for! With so much free time, however, lack of discipline can lead to boredom, more eating and sugary, fatty, high-calorie comfort food. It's a great time to be a chef, but I warn people not to become bakers. If you find yourself making pies, cakes, muffins, etc. on a daily basis - it's time for an intervention! Also, watch your alcohol consumption. Wine and beer sales are up nationally over 50% so please don't make this a daily habit. Use this time to GET HEALTHY. Next week our topic is exercise!! Like and follow our page for updates and more!

Chapter 1: FAMILY It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens. Never before have family dynamics been so changed for so many. With the novel coronavirus pandemic causing virtually everyone to shelter in place, nuclear families are together 24/7, while contact with extended family (i.e. grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) is entirely cut off. Dysfunctional families fueled by job loss and increased alcohol sales have led... to a sharp increase in domestic and child abuse. Many senior citizens, particularly the 80 year old plus generation who is not tech savvy, are more isolated than ever before, Clearly, government orders to stay at home while saving lives, has caused misery for many, many people. However, there is a silver lining. With schools closed, millions of families are now home schooling. As people get exhausted watching the news and Netfilx, pastimes from the pre-computer age are being enjoyed around the dinner table - arts and crafts, puzzles, board games, dominoes, card games, and cross word puzzles are great family fun, and provide parents with the opportunity to recall stories of playing these games when they were children. I’ve enjoyed telling my sons about playing cards with my grandmother. Nanna loved playing gin rummy, and while being in her late seventies and eighties never tired of beating me consistently. She never worried about my self-esteem, or praised me for participation. She gloated in her victories, teased me unmercifully, and taunted me in a way that is prohibited by the NCAA, NBA, and NFL. No do overs. I f I made a stupid move, she let me know, and then beat me and laughed. She never tired of winning, and we’d play for hours. But it was good. I loved her, and liked to see her happy. And I’ve always been a competitor. So over the years I steadily improved and eventually could hold my own. My winning percentage continued to rise. But she was still Nick Saban and I was the rest of the SEC - at the end of the day, she had the last laugh. - Dr. Michael Huppert. Follow us for office updates and next week's post on nutrition and diet!

Dear Friend, Hope you, your family, and friends are staying well during this COVID shutdown. Studying the situation closely, our office has been closed since March 23, 2020. While chiropractors are considered an "essential business," I felt the risk of infection outweighed the benefit of being adjusted. I am not aware of anyone who died because they missed their adjustment, on the other hand thousands are dying from exposure to the virus. If you are in pain, please call my o...ffice or cell phone for recommendations. At the moment, there are several chiropractic offices that are still open in Athens/Oconee, and might be able to help. We pray this pandemic will be over soon with minimal loss of life and livelihood. Looking forward to seeing you, Dr. Michael Huppert and FPC staff P.S. With a lot of time on our hands, here are some areas that we can give our attention so we're in tip top shape when things return to normal! 1. Family 2. Nutrition/Diet 3. Exercise 4. Sleep/Rest 5. Spiritual 6. Play/Fun 7. Creativity 8. Hobby I'll be posting on each of these areas weekly, for the next eight weeks. Please tune in and comment!

Dear Patients, Due to the ever increasing measures that our country is taking to keep us all safe from the Coronavirus, many businesses have had to temporarily close. After much consideration, prayer, and discussions with fellow healthcare providers, we have decided it is best to close the practice for the next two weeks, starting Monday, March 23. While we would love to continue offering our services to help you feel better and stay healthy, we all need to do everything we c...an to help prevent spread of this virus. Many of our patients are young, healthy and not at high risk. However, if they are exposed to COVID-19, they can bring the infection to loved ones who may be at higher risk. If you have an injury or significant flare up that you feel requires our help, please feel free to call the office at (706) 546-7700 and leave a message. We will still be checking our messages daily and will try to get back to you as soon as possible. Five Points Chiropractic
