Maria Hnarakis is a #breastcancersurvivor and a part of the 84 family. Today, we are celebrating Maria’s strength and honoring the life of her mother as she shares their story with us. My Mom was diagnosed when she was 42 years old and passed when she was only 47 (I was 15). I was diagnosed when I was 38 and am very grateful to God that I am still here to share this story My initial treatment consisted of the Big 3 as I like to call them: surgery, chemo and radiation ...followed by additional radiation and ongoing continuous treatment. This is a private journey, but I was excited and inspired to write this when I first heard about 84’s partnership with UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation because that has been my team for over 15 years. Everyone (doctors, nurses, physician assistants, schedulers, technicians, etc.) at the Women’s Cancer Center on the 4th Floor at Magee is amazing! They are consummate professionals, experts in their fields and also the best of people, with the kindest of hearts. They manage to make a not so pleasant place seem welcoming and turn a possibly negative experience into a positive one. Each patient has a different perspective on their journey and that should be respected. I sit in the Training and Development Department at 84 Lumber Team Headquarters, so by nature, I humbly believe that everything in life is meant to be a learning experience. Cancer, and the subsequent journey, has taught me so much about life, others and myself. My takeaway lesson is: life really is too short so make the most of it and be kind while you’re doing so. I thank 84 for the significant donation to the Magee-Women’s Research Institute; they do good work! The research of yesterday has helped my generation of patients, and the research of today will help the next generation. Significant progress has been made. But more needs to be done. Here’s to the healthcare workers, the patients (past, present, future) and their families and friends. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #breastcancerawareness #cancerresearch

Barbara Moore is a #breastcancersurvivor, and her daughter Lori Moore is a part of the 84 family. Today, we are celebrating Barbara and Lori’s strength and thank them for sharing their story with us: My mom’s breast cancer journey started on May 22, 2020, the day we received the results of her biopsy. Cancer is a bad word for anyone to hear from a doctor, but it was like a punch in the face for us when she heard it because we have already lost my sister-n-law in 2011 and my ...father in 2013 to cancer, and this brought back difficult memories. However, we were always taught as children to stay positive, stay strong, and never give up, so I encouraged her to relax and take one step and one day at a time. I assured her that we were not going to give up nor lose this battle this time around. Mom was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. After a few scans and tests, they found more nodules and requested additional biopsies. Some of the other nodules also tested positive in the same breast, and the nodules in the other breast were not positive but were in a phase that could be of concern in the future. She had a choice, and Mom choose to have a #DoubleMastectomy. Her surgery was on August 12, 2020 and was a success! She still had to meet with an Oncologist to determine if she would need to have chemo and/or radiation. Mom called me in tears once again on September 28, 2020 but this time with good news! Her oncologist told her she would not have to have chemo, she would not have to have radiation, and she would not have to see him again for 4 months. She does, however, have to take the aromatase inhibitor, Arimidex, once a day for 5 years. That was the happiest moment and the greatest words she had heard since May. As of today, Mom is feeling good and still so excited about her results!" #breastcancerawareness #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #BCAM
