Deontez Wimbley from Georgia Tech (GT), provided Bystander Intervention Methods to prevent sexual assaults and DeAnna Swope from Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV), provided how to be an ally for DV survivors. We thanked them for pro bono their times to educate us about the Very enriched information.

PRESS RELEASE Atlanta Black Deaf Advocates PO BOX 2153 Decatur GA 30030-9998... May 22, 2019 Board of Directors Georgia Association of the Deaf PO Box 7023 Columbus, GA 31908 Dear GAD Board of Directors, One of ABDA’s stated general purposes and objectives is to advocate with and for the Black Deaf community. As an affiliate member of GAD, ABDA Board members intend to carry out that mission by expressing our concerns regarding GAD’s workshop selections slotted for the upcoming 2019 conference. With the theme Embracing Our Culture, the current assumption is that the focus would be on educating our Deaf Community about diversity. We are disappointed that there is a lack of workshop focused on diversity. We are very concerned that there are no Deaf People of Color presenters. We are concerned that our appointed representative never received a finalized schedule until someone digitally tagged him on social media. We are concerned that there was no online form for call for papers with deadlines. We are concerned that local Deaf Georgians were not tapped to showcase their experiences/knowledge as a professional presenter. The overall look is not appropriate for a deaf organization serving a state with very diverse Deaf population, especially for a conference occurring in Metro Atlanta. Metro Atlanta is our base. For that reason, ABDA will refrain from promoting the conference to its members and the Black Deaf community as we cannot in good conscience support the current format of the workshop agenda. In short, ABDA is not satisfied with the choice of GAD’s workshops for the 2019 GAD conference. We know that it will be very difficult to change the workshops at a very short notice. It is our hope that the in the future that the next GAD board members will be open minded, show better and professional preparation about posting formal call for papers and workshop selections (which should have been the decision of the Conference Workshop Coordinator), and have an open dialogue about the diversity issues within Deaf Community in Georgia. Regards, ABDA Board of Directors
