A continuous set of loud beepsbeep, beep, beepmeans smoke or carbon monoxide is present in your home. Get out and stay out! Call 9-1-1 from outside. For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by a qualified electrician so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates. It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed. Chirping that continues after changing the battery means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

Take a look at this video from Athens-Clarke County, GA Unified Government that highlights many of the initiatives that took place in several departments throughout the county last year. This particular video highlights some of the things that occurred in spring and early summer. Stay until the end to see our department featured. We would like to acknowledge Barrett's Towing for their continuous support of our department by donating wrecked cars for use in vehicle extrication training. Their drivers also take the time to arrange cars to facilitate realistic crash scenes to help us have situational based training. Many of the things that happen for the benefit of our community happen behind the scenes. Be sure to check out this video to make yourself aware of them.

Here you see pictures taken this morning of Tanker 1 in action. This truck has the capability of pump and roll operations to extinguish fires while on the go. It also has a 1,500 gallon on board water tank. And the 4x4 operation allows it to tackle almost any terrain. It’s a great resource to have when the situation dictates. This truck operates out of Fire Station 6 on Athena Drive.

While we all love the holidays, it’s important to know your tree’s expiration date! Fresh cut trees, even if watered daily, will dry out in about four weeks. Ti...me to get rid that tree and look forward to 2021! Make fire safety your New Year's resolution: - make sure you have working smoke alarms inside/outside sleeping rooms on every level of the home including the basement, - create and practice a fire escape plan with everyone in the home, - teach your friends and family the importance of closing doors and always #CloseBeforeYouDoze!

We would like to thank the Georgia Army National Guard Company C 1-106 Army Air Assault Helicopter Battalion and our friends at the Athens Ben Epps Airport for allowing us to participate in a helicopter crash rescue drill this afternoon. It was exciting to have an Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and its highly trained crew to simulate an emergency situation that our crews can now be more prepared for. This was an excellent opportunity that we are grateful for and thanks to all that made it possible.

Many of the house fires in our area start in the kitchen. And many are the result of people falling asleep while things are cooking. Don’t cook when tired. And never leave food unattended while cooking.
