November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, accounting for 1 in 4 cancer deaths in the United States. It will kill more than 135,000 men and women in the U.S. this year. Nearly 80% of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. are thought to result from smoking, however it can be diagnosed in anyone. About 25,000 people who never smoked die of lung cancer every year. If counted as a separate category, lung cancers not caused by smoking would rank among the top 10 cancer deaths.
