Week 25 of Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting - Use a Positive "I" Message to Encourage Positive Behavior - When people of any age become discouraged, their behavior becomes less productive or even downright negative, and they may give up altogether. One sure way for you to discourage your kids is to ignore their positive efforts to improve. Their perspective becomes Why bother? Doc Pop explains in this week's video. #activeparenting, #52weeks, #52weeksofactiveparenting, #activeparentingleaders, #parentingeducation, #parenting, #parentingtips Go to www.activeparenting.com for information about our video based parenting programs or https://activeparenting.com//doc-pops-52-weeks-of-active-/ to purchase Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting book.

Week 23 - Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting - Logical Consequences vs. Punishment - The difference between logical consequences and punishment is that they are logically connected to the misbehavior rather than arbitrary. After all, what does sitting in the corner have to do with coloring on the walls? When we connect the consequence logically to the misbehavior, kids not only are more likely to see the justice in our actions, but they learn to be responsible for the co...nsequences of their actions. Doc Pop explains in this weeks video. This is another important aspect of discipline we teach in Active Parenting. #parentingleaders, #parentingeducation, #parenting, #parenteducator, #parents, #activeparenting, #discipline, #disciplinetechnique For more information about our video based programs, to order Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting book or sign up for an online course go to www.activeparenting.com

Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting - Week 22 - Firm Reminders: The KISS Rule (Keep It Short and Simple)- When kids don’t do what you ask them to do, even when you have used a polite request and an I message, sometimes a firm reminder is called for. The idea behind a firm reminder is to tell them in as few words as possible what you want them to do. Doc Pop explains in this week's video. (Reviewing the previous two weeks videos, Polite Requests and "I" Messages, wil...l lead up to this week's discipline skill. If you were unable to watch, it is recommended you go back and view so that this skill is used in the appropriate order. Parenting Key for Discipline - Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting - Week 21 - When a Polite Request Doesn't Work Try an I Message Polite requests will not always work to change a misbehavior, either because the child is getting some kind of pay-off from the misbehavior and wants to continue getting it or the misbehavior has become a bad habit and it’s hard to break bad habits, which is bad. (But it’s also hard to break good habits, which is good.) The upshot is that yo...u often need firmer discipline tools. The key is to get progressively firmer until you get results. Overkill is just bad parenting, and it doesn’t teach character, only fear (of you!). And that isn’t good for you, your child, or the relationship. So, when using discipline, it is always best to proceed gently and in small increments until you get the results that you want. Doc Pop explains how to use I messages while disciplining your child in this week’s video. Taking the time to watch could solve some of the issues you have with your child. The following is for your practice at home after you view this video. I Message I have a problem with____________________________________________. Doc Pop's 52 Weeks of Active Parenting - Week 20 - Polite Requests - We often speak to children in such a disrespectful way that we set ourselves up for a power struggle before we even get going. Life in our democratic society means that we are all entitled to be treated respectfully, even when we are being disciplined by an authority. To start the disicpline process use polite requests. Doc Pop’s 52 Weeks of Active Parenting Week 18 Family Meeting: No Smoking - There are two reasons for this week’s topic: one, family meetings are good, and two, smoking is bad. When holding a family meeting on any topic make sure that you don’t turn it into a lecture. This should be an open discussion in which you ask good questions to generate dialog, then use your active communication skills to listen to your children’s answers and help them think it through. Try to set... aside time to watch this week’s video and consider how to talk to your children about not smoking. You may think, My child will not smoke! and we hope you are right but laying out and discussing the information will help deter any future pressure to do so. Then in the future hold family meetings on other subjects that pertain to your family. Doc Pop explains in this week’s video. If you have the book questions are laid out to help guide you through the meeting. https://activeparenting.com//doc-pops-52-weeks-of-active-/ This week’s video is a little longer in length because it handles two important subjects Family Meetings and Not Smoking. #nonsmoking, #familymeetings, #activeparenting, #docpop, #52weeksofactiveparenting, #parenting, #stopsmoking For more information about Active Parenting and our books and programs go to: www.activeparenting.com.

The Beauty of a Good Rule - As promised last week, we are posting a series of tips for making your children's rules once a week. This week we suggest only making rules you really need. It is hard for young children to remember a lot of rules. Older children can remember more. At first, rules about health and safety are the most important. You might wait until your child is 4 or 5 years old before you teach rules about manners. Children can understand the idea of fairness... very early, so be sure that you have a good reason for every rule you make. For example, "We brush our teeth every night so that they will be clean and healthy." Even if your child is too young to fully understand the reason, it helps her learn that it's important to have good reasons for what you do. (Excerpt from Active Parenting's First Five Years.) For more parenting tips and tools to use with your children check out our online course web site. www.activeparentingcourses.com or our Active Parenting web site at www.activeparenting.com. Parenting Key - The Beauty of a Good Rule - Often children misbehave because they do not know how to act. They need to learn. And they will learn if we teach them the right way. Making rules is one way to teach them. To Protect: Children do not know that the world can be dangerous. We make rules to keep them safe. Example - Rule: Children do not play with knives. Ready children for life: Since we live in a world where everyone has rules and laws, we want to help our ...children learn that it's usually best to follow the rules. Rule: We take turns on the swing. Easier Parenting: When you set clear rules in your home and make sure everyone follows them all the time, then you won't have to work as hard to discipline. When children know what you expect from them, they are LESS likely to misbehave. Rule: Dirty clothes go in the hamper. (Excerpts from First Five Years.) #activeparenting, #activeparents, #parenting, #ffy, #firstfiveyears Follow Active Parenting for Tips for Making Rules. We'll add a post a week with one of the rules. Mindfulness is...paying attention fully in the present moment on purpose. Parenting can be stressful. Too much stress is not only harmful to you; it can also be harmful to your children. So it's important that you have ways to reduce stress in your life. That is where mindfulness can help. The Mom in this picture is providing an example for her child of one way to exercise mindfulness. Teaching your children how to be mindful can help them be calmer, happier and more focus...ed. In our program, Active Parenting First Five Years, there is a Mindful Moment in each chapter that will help both you and your child practice mindfulness. Our full program is available to parenting education leaders for a 30 day preview.
