Join us for our final night of Chanukah with the Cohen family leading our candle lighting!

Ahavath Achim Synagogue 14.12.2020

Teaching and candle lighting for the seventh night of Chanukah led by the Harber family! Thanks to Rick Harber,Lori Cherkas Harber, and family! Please enjoy a teaching from Rabbi Sandler: It’s the seventh day of Chanukah are you running out of oil energy? Have you given all the Chanukah presents and gelt you are going to give this year? Are you finally done eating latkes? Later today we will light the Chanukah menorah for the final time this year. Unlike our pocketbooks a...nd stomachs which are with the conclusion of the holiday, respectively, too thin and too f ull (no, I would never say fat), the light of the candles are approaching their brightest and most compelling. Rabbi Yehudah Leib Alter of Ger (19th century), known as the S’fat Emet, wrote the following: Especially at this season, when lights were miraculously lit for Israel even though they did not have enough oil, there remains light even now to help us, with the aid of these Hanukkah candles, to find that hidden light within. The Hanukkah candles are a spiritual symbol; the light of the commandments by which we search out our inner selves. We seek out the hidden divine light within ourselves; the mitzvot are light-seeking candles, instruments given to us to aid us in that search. The brilliant light of the menorah, soon to find its fullest expression, illuminates outwardly and inwardly. That inward light helps us to focus on what might have been obscured. What have we been missing deep within us? Is it untapped strength? Is it abiding resilience? Is it possibly the God within, the divine direction that seeks our best and caring efforts? I hope the brilliant light of the Chanukah menorah later today will reveal what you might have been missing. Chag Urim Sameach! May the light of this Chanukah holiday genuinely serve to illuminate what is deep inside you.

Sixth night of Chanukah candle lighting led by the Hirsch family! - Adam Hirsch and Mandy Hirsch Please enjoy this teaching from Rabbi Rosenthal: One of the conversations that brews in the social justice arena is about presence. We Jews love to talk about our involvement in righteous causes from the past. I too have been enamored at the picture of Rabbi Abraham Heschel marching arm in arm with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights heroes in Selma, Alabama, and fel...Continue reading
