Starting December 26th, some families celebrate Kwanzaa. The name Kwanzaa comes from the phrase matunda ya kwanza which means first fruits in Swahili. Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in its own way, but celebrations often include songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal. On each of the seven nights, families gather and a child lights one of the candles on the Kinara, then one of the seven principles, values of African culture, is discussed.

Merry Christmas and Happy Geeta Jayanti! Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. Gita Jayanti is celebrated worldwide by all devotees of Lord Krishna (followers of Sanatana Dharma), who revere Bhagavad Gita as their Divine Mother because she teaches (in a non-sectarian and scientific manner) how to re-establish our lost relationship with God Almighty (The Supreme).

Festivus is today, December 23rd, and it’s perfect for those who don’t have a traditional holiday to celebrate. Although it sounds paradoxical, its purpose makes a lot of sense. Not everyone has a major holiday to celebrate like Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa and they can feel left out. This holiday gives many people a non-denominational and non-commercial holiday to call their own. Festivus is for everybody!

The Winter Solstice marks the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere), all thanks to the tilt of the earth. You can always find a reason to rejoice, because after today, you’ll see gradually shorter nights and longer days, which means you can look forward to the emergence of spring.

Winter Break is coming up next week (from 12/21 through Friday 1/1), but we're offering some special bonus classes over the break! Our classes for the week of 12/21 are below: Monday 5:45 to 6:30 PM: All Ranks Nunchaku and Bokken (Master Blumreich)- This class on bokken (wooden sword) and nunchaku is open to all ranks; material will be tailored to fit the experience level of class participants. No weapons? No problem!- spare bokken and nunchaku will be on hand for students wh...o need them. Tuesday 5:15 to 6:00 PM: Pre-K Fun Day (Master Blumreich)- A class for our little ones (3-to-6-year-olds) with a special focus on fun and games! Tuesday 5:30 to 6:15 PM: All Ranks Combinations Focus (Mr. Welsh)- This class will focus on sequencing techniques into logical and effective patterns and is open to all ranks and experience levels. For students who attend with a workout partner from their household, class curriculum may include more advanced self-defense flows. Wednesday 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM: All Ranks Kali (Mr. Bishop)- Kali is a Filipino martial art that incorporates single or double short sticks and fluid motion. As with our nunchaku and bokken class, this class is open to all ranks, material will be tailored to fit participants, and spare Kali sticks will be available as needed. We will be holding additional bonus classes during the week of 12/28. Please keep an eye on your email for more details. Only 200 copies of this limited release were made. Once they have all been purchased (and quite a few have already), no more will be made available. So be sure to pick yours up before they are sold out. Copies will be available for purchase at the AKF Pro Shop at the Kyuki-Do Extravaganza in just a couple of weeks! Purchase your book and then get it signed by the other Masters at the Meet the Masters book signing event on Saturday evening! (Find the form that they demonstrated in the book!) Las Posadas is from December 16th through December 24th, and is celebrated by some Hispanic families in the United States. It's a nine-day celebration before Christmas, beginning with a procession with candles, songs and sometimes even people playing the parts of Mary and Joseph who lead the parade.
