Halloween and Food Allergies - A Message From Our Physicians Whether your children are going trick or treating or you're going to a Halloween party, please remain vigilant if you have food allergies! Many of the candies and dishes served contain nuts, fruits, or other ingredients that can cause the life threatening reaction of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is marked by the rapid development of an all-over allergic reaction. Common symptoms include itchy rashes like hives, vomiting..., upset stomach, diarrhea, nasal symptoms, throat closing, troubles breathing, and low blood pressure. Low blood pressure might be manifested as light-headedness or dizziness. Young children who are not very verbal might exhibit throat closing by coughing, choking, gagging, or drooling. If mild symptoms develop like any itchy rash, the best treatment would be an antihistamine like Benadryl or Zyrtec. Be mindful that Benadryl might make you sleepy, so a nonsedating anthistamine like Zyrtec might be a better choice. For more serious reactions like throat closing, breathing problems, or low blood pressure, the first and best treatment is epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. If you have previously been diagnosed with a food allergy, you likely have an emergency epinenephrine auto-injector (for example, EpiPen or Auvi Q). The epinephrine should be given and 911 should be called. It is better to be safe than sorry, so making sure everything is alright by going to the ER is a good idea. With a severe reaction, don’t waste time by giving an antihistamine first! One of the hard parts about food allergies is reading labels which can be confusing at times. In the past, the label might not have listed foods in plain English. Scientific names were often used making it difficult for people to figure them out. In 2006, the federal government passed a law requiring that foods be labelled plainly. This has helped tremendously, but it has created an unintended consequence. Manufacturing companies now go to the opposite extreme and put foods on the labels that might be in the food. You have undoubtedly seen foods with disclaimers like might contain trace amounts of or processed in a facility which contains... It is difficult to know what to do with that information. Studies have indicated that about 10% of those foods actually contain measurable amounts of the food in question. Ultimately, until better labeling is available, the recommended course of action is to avoid those foods. Again, better safe than sorry. So, have a great Halloween, but please be careful! Enjoy the treats, but watch out for those tricks when it comes to food allergies.

A few of our employees decided to dress up for Halloween today. Alex didn't scare any children (too bad). Keyanna the Kitty was ready to help with any scratch tests that needed to be done. Julie worked her AR using a crayon. Mrs. Dorothy was able to give shots dressed as a cute panda. Be safe and have fun everyone!
