You may have heard the term 'Scaling and Root Planing' used by your hygienist or dentist, but what is it and why do you need it? When periodontal disease is present, it causes pockets to form in your gums, which allows bacteria and tartar to build up. Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is a non-surgical, deep cleaning of these pockets. It's most effective in the early stages of gum disease and can help to reduce periodontal pocket depths, thus providing a more positive prognosis for the possibility of saving gum tissue, bone, and teeth.
