Carter G. Woodson, known as the Father of Black History, was the second African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard. He dedicated his career to the f...ield of African American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide institution. He recognized that the American education system offered very little information about the accomplishments of African Americans. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson first choose the second week of February to coincide with the birthday of Frederick Douglass, a famed abolitionist who escaped from slavery and President Abraham Lincoln, who formally abolished slavery. Woodson died on April 3, 1950, a respected and honored figure who received accolades for his vision. The theme for Black History Month, 2021, is The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity, chosen by the Association for the Study of African American American Life and History.
