Black History Fact of the Day: Despite having no formal education in engineering or metalwork, Andrew J. Beard invented an automatic railroad car coupling device called the Jenny Coupler. Prior to the Jenny Coupler, train cars were joined together manually, causing thousands of railroad workers to lose their hands, arms, and even their lives. Born in Eastlake, Alabama, in 1850, Beard labored for years in railroad yards where he lost his own leg while trying to execute the rapid procedure of manually coupling train cars with a pin. Updated versions of his invention are still used today. #BecauseOfThemWeCan

Black History Fact of the Day: On March 2nd, 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks was launched into the public view, 15 year-old Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. While studying about historic Black figures in her segregated school, she came to realize that Jim Crow was morally wrong. When she was told to give up her seat, It felt like Sojourner Truth was on one side pushing me down, and Harriet Tubman was on the other side of me pushing me down. I couldn't get up." #BecauseOfThemWeCan
