Two UGA students participated in the SNAP Instagram challenge where they cooked, shopped and ate off of a standard SNAP grocery budget of $6.70 per day.

Transplanting winter spinach. . Since we use movable high tunnels, we can transplant or direct sow spinach in beds adjacent to the high tunnel named Moveable Fe...ast and then move it over (currently the tunnel is over our summer peppers and eggplant) the spinach beds by the end of October. Renegade and Carmel are our favorite winter spinach varieties, and this year we are trialing Auroch too. . And a big heartfelt thank you to Claudine @ilikefwords. This is her last week and she’s been a powerhouse systems organizer, a dedicated worker, and an absolute joy to have on the farm this year. Winter Squash babies all harvested, lined up, and ready to cure. Koginut, Honey Nut, and 898 Mini-Butternut are curing on the tables, and Metro and Waldo Butter...nuts are curing in green crates. He has permanently fallen from Grace. For Joel, Love is not the Way. Gone are the days where I will recommend a book from Joel Salatin. Future generations of sustainable farmers will use him as an example of exceptional genius ... corrupted by harmful theology (he’s a Christian fundamentalist), Southern identity politics (he’s a white supremacist ... has been for years), and a resistance to emotional intelligence (almost zero ability to learn from and dialogue with the other ... to the point of narcissism and name calling). And so the hero became a villain ... not because woke people assassinated his character ... but because he chose to feed the wolf instead of the Lamb.

If anyone wants an anecdote about how all our actions are interconnected during this #coronavirus pandemic, here's one from my life: Two weeks ago my grandmothe...r had emergency surgery, and has been hospitalized since. She had been making slow but steady progress until last night when she took a drastic turn for the worse. In a moment of cognition last night she asked to have all assisted breathing discontinued. She passed away about an hour ago. Meanwhile, in Orlando, my sister gets the call this morning from my dad with an update about my grandmother. Her husband heads to work to tie up loose ends so they can jump in a car to come be with our family in NC. When he arrives at work, he gets a call from his intern who let him know that he (the intern) has tested positive for COVID-19. My brother-in-law knew this was a possibility because his intern has a second job at a bar. He got a call from the bar on Monday that a couple customers who had spent all afternoon at the bar on Saturday had tested positive. They went out this weekend even though they had gotten tested for COVID-19 last Thursday. My brother in law immediately sent his intern home, but had at least half a day of exposure, including riding in a car. So, long story short, my sister and brother-in-law are now scrambling to get tested in order to safely travel to our grandmother's funeral, all because a couple of clowns my sister has never met NEEDED to go to a bar when they knew they could be sick. Bottom line, the expert advice is all very clear at this point: social distance, wear a mask in public, and stay home if you have any symptoms. You have no idea the chain reaction your selfish behavior can cause. Feel free to share.
