Athens Land Trust 15.12.2020

The MLK Day of Service may look a little different this year, but we are excited to be one of many organizations finding innovative ways to make this day safe for volunteers while still honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and his commitment to service. We will have an invasive plant removal work day at Five Acre Woods and a work day at Mae Willie Morton Community Garden this year! Due to the pandemic, these volunteer opportunities will be divided into multiple shifts with smaller groups, and we will not be offering walk-up registration, so be sure to register ahead of time! Click below for more details, information on COVID-19 safety protocol, and a full list of volunteer opportunities. https://www.givepulse.com//118913-Athens-MLK-Day-of-Service

The Athens Land Trust office is closed and all public events are cancelled until further notice due to concerns about COVID-19. We are closely following the advice and guidelines of public health officials and are regularly updating our procedures and protocols to ensure our residents and staff are safe. In our efforts to maintain a healthy environment for staff and residents, we ask that you please stay home and not come into our Athens office. If you need to meet or speak t...o a staff person, please call and speak to that person over the phone, or email them. If you are a renter or lease purchaser, please pay your rent via check or money order through the mail. For our residents, please note that we are only responding to emergencies, such as no heat, no hot water, fire or leaking water. If this happens, we will be contacting professionals in the field to address the situation. If you are experiencing a non-housing-related emergency situation, please contact 911. If you have a non-emergency issue and you are not sure who your point of contact should be, please email Daun Fest, Director of Operations, at [email protected]. Did you know that the emphasis on hand washing comes from the fact that the virus breaks down well in soap and water? Scrubbing for twenty seconds and keeping your hands away from your face as much as you can are important steps in stopping the spread of the virus. In addition, please practice social distancing (avoiding close contact-which means being within approximately 6 feet of someone, or coming into direct contact with someone). Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work together in this unprecedented situation.

Our Youth Development programs are unique. We offer three paid job skills training programs; the Young Urban Farmers the Young Urban Builders and the Young Conservation Stewards. Each program provides paid training and education for high-school aged youth in Athens-Clarke County. We are currently accepting applications for the Young Urban Builders and Young Urban Farmers programs. The Young Urban Builders program was started as a way to address youth unemployment and perform... owner-occupied rehabilitation in the West Broad Neighborhood. The program is designed to provide job training and experience while working on community projects and aiding in neighborhood revitalization. YUB students are involved at all stages in the rehabilitation process to allow for a variety of skills to be developed. The Young Urban Farmers program (YUF) is a work-based learning youth development program for high school students to learn technical gardening and farming skills, gain exposure to new foods through culinary arts, and explore entrepreneurial endeavors. The program utilizes a multifaceted approach to encourage community and civic engagement in young people. Participants gain job training skills at the West Broad Farmers Market, learn about careers in Agriculture through field trips, farm visits, and guest speakers, and test potential business ideas through step-by-step business planning. Our curriculum is taught from a social justice perspective that is founded in equity and community empowerment. We were so honored to participate in this project about resilience. The show opens today at the Lyndon House. Hundreds of Athenians answered the question, "What does resilience mean to you?" you can see the beauty of the answers here: imaginationsquared.org

The land trust family is struggling today to say goodbye to one of our own. Clothilda Barnett, our housing director and good friend, passed away last night after a brief battle with cancer. She had officially been with us for a year and half, but it felt like so much longer because she had been working alongside us at every position she had been in for the last 20 years. It was like welcoming family home when she joined our team. Her passion for helping families in Athens was real and true. Her heart was kind and she was always willing to share her dimples and smile. We are reeling from this loss and we know many of the families in the ALT family will be feeling lost today too. Please do something kind for someone today in honor of all the kindness Clo put out into this world.
