Dr. Lonnie Herzog is an Internal Medicine physician in Atlanta, GA. He has spent over 30 years treating patients with Primary Care Physicians of Atlanta at Northside Hospital. Now, he is not only using his experience and training to save lives, he is also using what’s inside him. He, his wife, Kim, and his daughter, Nikki all tested positive for COVID-19 in August. We were fortunate to have mild cases and recovered quickly without any complications, said Dr. Herzog. After r...ecovering, they wanted to help others, so they donated convalescent plasma with Atlanta Blood Services (ABS). He said, it was important to be able to give as a family. Kim said, why wouldn’t we use our good fortune to help others? Dr. Herzog made his first donation a few weeks ago. Nikki and Kim were first-time donors on Friday. Nikki was a little apprehensive. Nikki is not a fan of needles but with the support of her parents, her brother, and the ABS staff, she completed her donation like a champ! Kim did not need any convincing by her husband, I knew it was the right thing to do. Dr. Alexander Herzog recently joined his Dad’s practice. He did not have COVID-19 but stopped by to cheer his family on while they donated. Both doctors are encouraging patients who recovered to donate convalescent plasma. Convalescent plasma is being collected from people who have recovered from coronavirus and have developed antibodies. Transfusing plasma that contains antibodies into a person still fighting the virus may provide a boost to the patient’s immune system and potentially help them recover. The plasma collected by ABS is being used by patients at Northside Hospital which is another reason it was important for Dr. Herzog to donate with Atlanta Blood Services. We went through being sick as a family. We can donate and help others as a family.
