On September 1, the new adoption statutes will go into effect. There are various statutes devoted to adoption and many of them have finally been updated and improved. The new law reduces adoption waiting times, legalizes the reimbursement of birth mothers' expenses in private adoptions, bans middlemen who profit from arranging adoptions and simplifies out-of-state adoptions. Georgia's adoption laws were previously considered cumbersome and this is a huge improvement for those of us to practice adoption law. I look forward to helping more people create their families!

SB 375, named Keep Faith in Adoption and Foster Care Act, has advanced advanced out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill will now be brought before the entire Senate The bill would allow taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to turn away same-sex couples and refuse services to youth who identify as LBGT. Contact your representatives regarding this very important issue.

Fulton county will begin issuing marriage licenses at 1pm!

Held: the fourteenth amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out of state. What a historic day and a victory for human rights!
