Cohort 1 had an amazing time herping with The Amphibian Foundation! We explored Clyde Shepard Nature Preserve and the diverse habitats that it has to offer. We lifted logs, sifted through puddles and turned over rocks to find salamanders, frogs, egg sacks and much more ! #optoutside #environmentaleducation #atlantaurbanecologists #natureexplorer #futureecologists
Saturday was a gorgeous day to get outside! Our second-year Atlanta Urban Ecologists spent the morning with American Rivers and Finding the Flint at Reynolds Nature Preserve, learning how urban development impacts our local watersheds. We saw firsthand how streams are degraded and learned why protecting greenspace is so vital. During our adventures we found lots of signs of springbasking turtles, mating frogs, nesting birds, ephemeral wildflowers, and even a baby watersnake!
Excited to see Atlanta Urban Ecologist Isaiah Scott in this upcoming webinar!
Cohort 1 hit the trail on a chilly morning to see some birds and perform community science! Using E-bird we were able to find and document over 30 species of birds, plus a salamander or 2! One of the reasons that birdwatching is becoming so popular is the opportunities for discovery. You can go to the same place many times and always end up seeing something different!
Here’s a great opportunity for our Urban Ecologists to learn how to turn their interest in nature into a career! Several free sessions with multiple conservation professionals will be offered, covering a variety of careers.
Today the second-year Atlanta Urban Ecologists visited the Three Billion exhibit at the The Hudgens Center for Art & Learning, an incredible and thought-provoking art exhibit highlighting the loss of three billion (one-third) of our planet’s birds during the last 50 years as a result of habitat loss, climate change, pollution, pesticides, window collisions, free-roaming cats, and other human-caused threats. The teens completed a scavenger hunt to learn more about the birds in the exhibit, the threats they face, and ways they can help. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
