Today's pointer: If you are going to file bankruptcy, make sure you inform your bankruptcy attorney of any "side" businesses you may have run in the past couple of years, even though you may not still do that. I am running into many clients with baking/cosmetology/lawn care businesses shown on their tax returns that are causing problems with their cases!

An interesting legal heads up!

I had a request from a client to address Asset Protection/Estate Planning vis-a-vis Medicaid Estate Recovery. SIMPLE ANSWER- do it NOW. There is a 5 year look back period for transfers of assets. So if you are aging, and want to protect your assets from Medicaid Estate Recovery after death, or if you are an heir interested in helping a loved one with this process, see an attorney now. Waiting until declining health is a recipe for disaster. Attached is a Medicaid information pamphlet available online.
