Meet the Team Tuesday ... Jessika Mason Jessika is one of the faces you’ll see at the front desk of The Ballroom Dance Center. She fell in love with dance as a girl and found a special meaning in praise and worship dance. As fate would have it, Jessika met her husband James when he taught fencing to the dancers in one of the original shows, The Seven Deadly Pirates, at The Ballroom Dance Center.... With a young daughter, Jessika traded her full-time position for a part-time one with The Ballroom Dance Center in order to devote more time to her family. An avid reader and lover of things international, she studied abroad in Italy. Jessika has always had an artistic and stylish bent, culminating in her own cottage business, Little Hidden Gems, designing jewelry with innovative and eccentric pieces such as aluminum tabs from soda cans combined with stones and semi -precious jewels. When questioned about wearing a boa to work, she quipped, That is the norm at The Ballroom Dance Center!

Have you considered giving yourself or someone else lessons via Zoom this Christmas season? If you're not quite sure you are ready for in-person lessons at the studio, virtual lessons via Zoom may be perfect for you and allow you to do what you love to do, dance! We have students who only do Zoom lessons and others who combine in-person and virtual learning. Lyddie and Charlie Hansen have discovered the benefits of combining in-person learning with virtual learning, which they can do from the comfort of their home. Not only do they enjoy the learning experience through virtual lessons, but it also gives them the flexibility they sometimes need with their busy schedules.

Snowball in July? No one likes to celebrate with music, dance, fellowship and good food more than we do at The Ballroom Dance Center! However, we embrace safety in postponing our upcoming Snowball. With Covid on the rise among friends, co-workers, and churches, with Thanksgiving and Christmas social liberties at hand, with health impaired loved ones among us, we will make merry, just not on December 11th. Please join the future fun for we WILL have our Christmas Dance, even if it is in July! All Snowball paid guests will have a credit for the rescheduled dance or for other Ballroom Dance Center activities. We will reschedule the Snowball when the pandemic is on the decline. With the same reasoning, we will postpone our January Open House and the resumption of our regularly scheduled group lessons.

Learn to Dance Tango at The BDC Why learn how to Tango: Tango is passionate, dramatic, and iconic. Movie stars like Sean Connery (as James Bond), Arnold Schwarzenegger (in True Lies) and Al Pacino (in Scent Of A Woman) had sizzling Tango scenes. When you dance Tango, you feel strong, powerful, and you make a big impression!... Where it comes from: Tango was born in Buenos Aires in the 1880’s. Immigrant workers from Africa and Europe along with the local Argentinian gauchos met and traded cultural rhythms and dance steps. From this melting pot emerged a highly passionate dance, one that the respectable classes of society shunned. But the forbidden nature of the Tango only heightened its popularity... When Tango hit Paris in 1912 it became an immediate sensation. Vernon & Irene Castle introduced Tango to the United States in 1913 where it was all the rage from the first World War through the 1950’s when rock and roll emerged, dominating the dance scene. Today, there are three types of Tango: Argentine Tango, American Tango, and International Tango. This is because dance is a living art form, like language, and varies within each genre - just like American English is different than British English. All three styles of Tango are a slightly different expression of the dance, although they all trace their roots to Buenos Aires and the Argentine Tango. Fun fact: Because men vastly outnumbered women in Buenos Aires at the time, men would gather and practice dance steps with each other. So it was very socially acceptable, even in that time, for men to Tango with other men. Tango songs you may know: Blue Tango by Leroy Anderson Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These) by Tanghetto Dance With Me by Debelah Morgan Hernando’s Hideaway from The Pajama Game Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre) by GoTan Project How to sign up and learn to dance: We’d love to teach you Tango, and other exciting dances we offer at the Ballroom Dance Center. To get started, call us at 706-854-8888 to schedule your complimentary new student orientation and learn how to add the joy of dance to your life.

Learn to Dance Cha Cha at the BDC Why learn how to Cha Cha: Cha Cha is lively, fun, and a little flirty. It’s also a very useful social dance to know as many modern songs feature a Cha Cha rhythm.... Where it comes from: Cha Cha evolved from a form of Cuban Mambo, and was introduced to the United States in the 1950’s promptly igniting a dance craze. Fun fact: Legend has it that Cha Cha got its name from the sound of women’s shoes shuffling across the floor as they danced. Cha Cha songs you may know: Havana (feat. Young Thug) by Camila Cabello Dynamite by Taio Cruz Lady Marmelade by Patti LaBelle Makes Me Wonder by Maroon 5 Oye Como Va by Santana How to sign up and learn to dance: We’d love to teach you Cha Cha, and other fun dances we offer at the Ballroom Dance Center. It begins with WEST COAST SWING CHARADES at 6:30 p.m.... Do you really know your basics? Hmmmm In this class, you will face your partner, and you will have to lead or follow based on what the pattern looks like! Only basic patterns will be used, and there will be no touching, because no touching is needed. It will be a mime type of class. So, what's the point? The point is to get you to pay attention to your dance partner! This will also be a touchless class with material used that you can practice on your own. To sign up for the workshops or private coaching sessions, call the studio at 706-854-8888. At The Ballroom Dance Center, all of our teachers are certified by a nationally recognized association, and even more importantly, all of our teachers are passionate about lifelong learning so they can evolve with you. With combined teaching experience t...otaling over 60 years, just like individuals in other professions and trades, the teachers at The Ballroom Dance Center pursue continuing education and certification. We know from years of mastering our craft that most people do care about how well they dance and are willing to invest their time and money into doing so. Learning to dance is not always fun and easy; sometimes it is hard and challenging. At The Ballroom Dance Center, we know how to guide you through this process because we have been there. It has taken time for us to excel through our own dance education. Sometimes you will be asked to get out of your comfort zone, but always in a safe environment that fosters learning. We believe you want to have fun, but we also know you really want to learn. With a superior reputation, as the oldest and most established ballroom dance studio in this area, we ALSO take pride in our innovative business model and the growth we have experienced for over 27 years. The Ballroom Dance Center is a stable and thriving business operating under the same ownership for over 27 years with a clear vision of who we are and what is important. Our founder, Emilie Tobias, is a former college administrator excelling in student services and international business education. When she opened The Ballroom Dance Center in 1992, it was with that same vision for excellence in dance education. Her vision was based on the value of constant learning and the belief that dance teachers should themselves be both dancers and teachers. Come have fun and learn from the only studio in the Augusta area where all teachers are certified regularly. Our staff, both instructional and administrative, consists of real people who provide real service. Why go anywhere but The Ballroom Dance Center when you want to have fun AND learn to dance from certified professionals?

Meet the Team Tuesday Marcia Mitchell joined our teaching team last year and is currently teaching Virtual Lessons from her home in Beaufort, South Carolina. She began dancing in 1998 when she discovered Ballroom through a social dance class at school. Immediately bitten by the Ballroom bug, she trained throughout the country before beginning her professional and teaching career in 2008. Marcia has competed professionally in the American Smooth division and competes with he...r students in American Smooth and Rhythm. She has toured professionally as an Argentine Tango dancer, teaching and performing at the DC Tango Festival, Spoleto Tango and other events. Marcia has earned the Master of Dance Degree with High Honors in Smooth and the Associate of Dance Degree with High Honors in Rhythm from Dance Vision International Dance Association (DVIDA) and is a member of the National Dance Council of America (NDCA). In 2013, Marcia opened her studio, Revolution Ballroom in Beaufort, South Carolina, where she teaches students of all ages and abilities. Marcia's mission is to inspire, encourage and empower her students to achieve their goals and to reach their full potential through dance. Marcia believes that dance has the power to transform our lives and to connect us to others in a positive and uplifting way. She also runs a teacher training program at her studio to train and prepare candidates for their national exams. She enjoys training the next generation of dance educators who will enrich the lives of students. In 2015, Marcia began to travel to The Ballroom Dance Center in Augusta to take weekly professional coaching with studio owner Emilie Tobias and her partner Val Ganiev. With Emilie and Val, she discovered a shared love of learning, a joy in dance and a dedication to continuous growth and development as a teacher and dancer. I was honored to accept the invitation to join the staff of The Ballroom Dance Center, stated Marcia, and I am excited to have the opportunity to share my love of dance with the students here. Whether through group or private, I believe anyone can learn to dance. Join me and discover the joy dance can bring to your life. I’ll see you on the dance floor! As a side note, Marcia served as an active duty Marine for eight years and in the Marine Reserve for 12 years.
