FIREFLIES 07.29.20 Daily Devotion #95 with Don Simpson It was Father’s Day 2006, when I was sitting in my backyard that warm Summer evening. The sun had set and... the sky was darkening. Kyli, my soon-to-be three-year-old granddaughter, was chasing fireflies. This had become a regular thing with us. I guess it’s good for the fireflies that she was still only two. But every now and then without any help from her Uncle Donnie or anyone else, she would manage to catch one in her fat little fist. She would then run to me to get it out for her. Ever so carefully, I would open her clenched fist, take the luminescent insect out of her hand and together we would gently place it into a small container that kept the firefly safe. Looking back, I think she enjoyed those evenings with me as much as I did with her. What I want to share with you is what God spoke to me while I was watching her that evening. It is one of the most powerful things I think I have ever gotten from Him. You see, while watching her catch the fireflies, I realized how God must have deliberately put these tiny little insects here for just this purpose. To be caught by tiny little humans with limited motor skills. Think about it. God deliberately and meticulously put these tiny creatures here for just this purpose. His design is spot on. I thought to myself, God made these just for babies. For fireflies must fly around only 18 to 24 inches above the ground. They are slower than a turtle, yet fast enough to be chased by a toddler. Sometimes even caught. They must be hardy enough to live inside a bedside container as the perfect nighttime companion, while at the same time be safe for little hands to touch. While I was watching her that evening, God said to me, "No, I did that for you." It then occurred to me, The Creator specifically made these little creatures for grandbabies, children, PaPas, Nanas, Mimi’s and just about everyone. Then I thought about the world we live on called Earth and how this tiny little speck of light can't even be seen by the rest of the expanse of the second heaven - Solar System, Galaxy, Universe, etc. This tiny, yet magnificent creature, simple yet magically complex, was put here deliberately by a loving God that delights in seeing His little ones chase them! Can anyone witness this miracle and still deny the existence of a creator? A creator that looks after us with the perfection in a way only a Loving God could. Can there be any doubt that He would indeed send His only Son to save us from ourselves? Luke 12:6-7 New International Version (NIV) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. There is a way for us, sent by a loving God. A free gift given through the unspeakable sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is ours for the taking. All we need to do is receive and walk in it. No perfection on our part is required. Perfection was in the price paid for our sins. Just follow Jesus. Like the fireflies that light up the dark summer nights, He will light up your life’s path and show you the way.
