The Barrow County Health Department will begin providing COVID-19 vaccinations by appointment at the Victor Lord Park Recreational Center, located at 175 2nd St...reet in Winder, on March 17, 2021. Appointments at the Recreation Center will be available every Wednesday for the next several weeks, supplementing the COVID-19 vaccination services provided at the Barrow County Health Department and greatly increasing availability for local residents. During the first several weeks of this expanded availability, health department staff will be contacting pre-registered, eligible individuals to schedule appointments at the Rec Center and the Barrow County Health Department. After the initial waitlist has been cleared, additional appointments will be made available. To locate other vaccination sites in the meantime, individuals who have not already pre-registered may visit: https://dph.georgia.gov/covid-vaccine

We would like to remind you that when you turn your clocks forward on March 14, don't forget to check all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well. Some things to check for: -Check the date, most detectors should be replaced every 10 years.... -Check to see if the detector is working by using the "test" button. -Change out the batteries every year to ensure they are working and fresh. Let’s live safer together!

Barrow County Emergency Services recognized four YMCA employees at the Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday night for their quick thinking and heroic actio...ns in helping to save a local woman's life at the Brad Akins YMCA recently. The employees were presented with challenge coins from BCES and certificates honoring their actions. Below is what Deputy Chief Heath Williams read during the meeting about what took place that day: 'On February 10, 2021 Terry Clemons arrived at the Brad Akins YMCA to see her family and to watch her two grandchildren at swimming lessons. Little did she know of the encounter she was about to have with these four individuals that would forever unite them and certainly change their lives. Mrs. Clemons suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the lobby of the indoor pool and fell to the floor. Two Lifeguards on staff at the YMCA, Rielly Edling and Ethan Coker, immediately came to her aid and began to give CPR. A call for help went out, Shannon McConnell, who had been teaching Mrs. Clemons' grandchildren swim lessons, called 911 and relayed all the information to the Barrow County Emergency Communications center. Sandee Kuthy, the Wellness Director at the YMCA, responded and retrieved the AED. The AED was applied and delivered one shock. After the shock Mrs. Clemons received one more round of CPR, at which time she began to breathe on her own. At the time Emergency Services arrived Mrs. Clemons had regained consciousness. She was transported emergently to the hospital. As you can see by her presence here tonight she is welI on her way to recovering. If not for the quick actions of Rielly, Ethan, Shannon, and Sandee this story would not have a happy ending. Barrow County Emergency Services would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to these individuals and thank them for being a part of an excellent Prehospital Emergency Medical System we have in Barrow County.'
