New pest control and watch dogs have made it to Bedgood Heritage Farm! Say hello to our baby guineas! Guineas are great to have around the farm for numerous reasons! 1. Pest control! The main diet for guineas is insects. Fleas, ticks, grasshoppers, flies, mosquitoes, crickets, slugs, worms, ants, and other insects! They also have been known to eat mice and they do not like snakes. Weed seeds are also on their diet (not the illegal kind)! 2. Farm watch dogs! Guinea fowl wi...ll sound an alarm any time something unusual happens on the property and make an effective tool for protecting livestock from danger by sounding an alarm and putting everyone on alert. 3. Eggs! Guinea eggs are delicious! 4. Feathers! Their feathers are sought after for arts and crafts! 5. Income! From the sale of guinea keets and hatching eggs. 6. Food! They are a delicious, slightly gamey alternative to chicken!

Great friend and great mentor! Vickey Russell at Hidden Acres Natural farm walking me through what will be my first lambing season. Her babies are coming a little earlier than mine so I was able to go see them and learn a little. Farming, to me, is about community. It’s about our neighbors and families. Sharing resources, sharing recipes, sharing knowledge, and in the end sharing the fruits of the labor for the season. If my friends or family are in need, I want to be able to... step up and help them. This is what I would call making America great again.
