"Thank goodness for Beehive Press." We say, thank goodness for Jane Fishman! Jane gave us a mention in her Sunday column addressing the demise of HB906, a bill that would have surely been responsible for the desecration of many sacred and previously protected sites across the state of Georgia. Thanks to a flood of calls and emails, this bill went down the drain. Here is Jane's story, and here is the link to the book she mentions, Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, the account of Fanny Kemble's 3 months at Butler Plantation. https://beehivefoundation.org//journal-of-a-residence-on-/
A few days ago we posted a few titles from @beehivepress that focus on the historic Black experience in Georgia, one of which is this book, SLAVERY TINE WHEN I WAS CHILLUN DOWN ON MARSTER’S PLANTATION, Edited by Ronald Killion and Charles Waller. Eighty years ago the last surviving Georgia slaves, living witnesses to plantation life, were growing old. This was the last opportunity to learn of the heartbreaking details of slavery from people who actually lived it. Interviewers... from the Federal Writer’s Project were dispatched to record these unique experiences, some of which are documented here in this book. (The Federal Writer’s Project was part of FDR’s New Deal, a brilliant series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms and regulations enacted to aid in recovery from the Great Depression. This all happened after President Herbert Hoover did nothing after the crash of 1929. Finally when FDR was elected, we finally had reform and recovery with The New Deal - what a novel idea, huh?) #slaveryhistory #federalwritersproject #slavestoriestoldbyslaves #blacklivesmatter #africanamericanhistory #africanamericans #thenewdeal #thebeehivefoundation #beehivepress https://beehivefoundation.org//slavery-time-when-i-was-c/ See more

A repost of our blog entry from October 2016. Mills Lane IV was more than a tree hugger: he started a tree fund. He was more than an admirer of Savannah’s streets: he paid for the renovation of a main artery. A repost from our blog entry of October 2016. "Mills Lane IV was more than a tree hugger: he started a tree fund. He was more than an admirer of Savannah’s streets: he paid for the renovation of a main artery."
(Blog repost from September 26, 2016) Today we continue our introduction to the Mills Lane family with Mills Lane IV starting on his own path through Harvard, the Navy and the back roads of the South pursuing research for his books on architecture. Fortunately for Savannah, he didn’t inherit the Lane family men’s love of banking. Rexanna Keller Lester is working on a book about Mills Bee Lane IV and his preservation legacy. #millslaneIV #millsbeelane #savannahhistory #southernhistory #architecturalhistory #historybuff #savannahga #buylocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportsavannah https://beehivefoundation.org/mills-lane-iv-pursues-his-ow/
Continuing the re-posting of our blog entries here. This post from September 12, 2016 introduces us to Anne and Mills Lane, Jr. "Anne and Mills Lane, Jr. were passionate about making downtown Savannah a livable place in the 1960s. They put their money where their hearts were. Today’s web post introduces some of the Lane projects including their work with landscape architect Clermont Lee. Lee has been in the news lately as Girl Scout officials decide what to do with the garden she designed at the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace." In an update, here is the link on the status of this garden from the March 11, 2020 Historic District Board of Review meeting that included this particular item. See the 'Staff Recommendations' page for the full discussion. https://www.thempc.org//march-11-2020-savanna/351_5009.pdf

THE PEOPLE OF GEORGIA, AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY, by Mills Lane. This is the true story of how Georgians, white and black, have really lived for the last 275 yearsLoyalists and revolutionaries in the colony, Indians and settlers in the frontier, masters and slaves on plantations, soldiers and civilians during the Civil War, farmers and businessmen in recent decades. This honest look is filled with fascinating details, some 170 illustrations and some arresting conclusions. All Americans, as they face what seem insoluble national problems and our diminished role in world affairs, can find consolation and wisdom in the history of a region that has already had to accept disasters and disappointments. THE RAMBLER IN GEORGIA, Edited by Mills Lane. This is a portrait of frontier Georgia, told in the words of thirteen travellers who came here from England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Sweden and New England, between the Revolution and the Civil War. There are stage coach wrecks along the highways and dirty beds and rusty forks at isolated taverns. The book is fresh and alive with personal, exciting, firsthand descriptions of rising raw towns in the wilderness, backwoods settler...s and plantations lost in the interminable forest. The most famous travellers are Basil Hall, Tyrone Power, James Silk Buckingham, Charles Lyell, Frederick Law Olmsted, plus eight others. The book is embellished with drawings of Georgia made in 1828 by Basil Hall. #georgiahistory #historybuff #frontiergeorgia #frontierhistory #southernhistory #millslane #savannahsmallbusiness #savannahpublisher #supportlocal #supportlocalbusiness https://beehivefoundation.org/produ/the-rambler-in-georgia/ See more
HEY HISTORY BUFFS! Georgia has a very conflicted history, one in which there are seldom simple and clear answers to questions we might have looking back from the 21st century. Our Documentary History of Georgia series offers insight into the complex issues that have always surrounded the state and her people. The six-volume series provides a comprehensive historical view of the state, from the founding of the colony, through the Colonial and Frontier years, diving into the perils of Slavery, the Civil War and on to The New South and the political aspirations of Jimmy Carter. Find it here on our website along with the rest of our collection at Beehive Press.https://beehivefoundation.org/all-bo/documentary-histories/
