A major design driver for every project we complete with P&G? Accessibility. Although the ADA has minimum requirements concerning accessibility, good designers can go beyond those basic requirements and provide solutions that fit each person’s needs. Inside The Hub at P&G, various seating types can accommodate anyone, and the service bar includes curved countertops at different heights to make the experience comfortable for every guest.... When designing with the usersas opposed to just for themyour designs can reach the next level.

Nature inspires us. When working with the University of Saint Francis - Fort Wayne, IN on the renovation and addition of the Achatz Hall of Science and John and Toni Murray Research Center, our goal was to seamlessly connect the building to its beautiful surroundings. The curved shape of the glass addition connects the building's interiors to the natural curves of Mirror Lake's shore. Beside the large glass façade, the cascading amphitheater stair offers captivating views an...d a place for students to rest, socialize, and study. Outdoor learning spaces with writing surfaces and seating were designed at the first level by the lake and on the rooftop terracegiving students additional opportunities to experience nature. Let this be a reminder that learning extends beyond the classroom.

The American Heart Association’s #CycleNation may have looked a bit different this time around, but we all worked toward the same great mission. The results are in from this year’s fundraiser: Cincinnati is the second highest fundraising city in the U.S., and the BHDP team had the second highest team mileage! As a group, we logged 838 miles and raised $4,790. Thomas Sens, Client Leader at BHDP, had the second highest individual mileage at 405 miles!... Great work, Cincinnati! Remember, there is still time to donate to this awesome cause. Just head over to this link: https://www2.heart.org/site/SPageServer/?pagename=cn_home

Collaboration + Ideation + Connection. When designing The Forum for Fifth Third Bank, these activities were top of mind. The 22,000-SF space is home to meeting spaces, huddle rooms, and other areas for bank employees to work and engage with colleagues. Included in The Forum is The Exchangea large, adjustable space that can house meetings of 200 people. The new environment is filled with energy and provides employees with more versatilityallowing individuals to balance collaboration with concentration and reflection. The space readily welcomed Steve Watkins from the Cincinnati Business Courier for its first public tour. Take a look at the photos they captured.

BHDP designs places and experiences that inspire students and research professionals alike to investigate, invent, create, and formulate more effectively. An example of this? Kenan Labs. BHDP was the Laboratory Planner and Architect for the phased renovation of all nine floors of the The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan Laboratoriesa building that houses the Departments of Chemistry and Applied Physical Sciences. Labs are designed to allow for maximum fle...xibility with fixed benches on the perimeter and a spacious floor plan made up of open space and mobile tables with overhead utility services. Corridor windows allow the formerly dark hallway to filter natural light into the interior of the floor plate and thus provide views into the lab spaces allowing for learning on display opportunities to occur. Future-focused labs are crucial to universities and their studentsespecially to advance science for the common good.

Nowadays, college libraries serve multiple purposes. Some students head to the library to study, while others use the library as a social and collaborative space. After opening its doors in 1953, West Virginia Wesleyan College’s main library did not keep up with the academic and social needs of its students. The library was underutilized, and it lacked the amenities that students need such as collaboration spaces, convenience outlets for electronic devices, and modern lightin...g and temperature controls. BHDP was commissioned to lead the library master planning and implement a new visionone that rebalances various functions of the library to focus more on the ways students learn and study in the current technological and sociological context. The new, rear library entrance addresses accessibility issues, connects the entire campus, and encourages student flow into the building. The open main floor includes soft seating, group study rooms, and a tutoring center. The library is now a central academic hub on campus, and the design is both timeless and comfortable. Take a look at the finished result, and see what we started with.

Architects who design today’s science laboratories work with researchers and scientists who, by their very nature, know the importance of safe practices. Still, the new coronavirus is a pathogen whose resistance eludes the research community. The microorganism will be conquered eventually, but in the meantime, scientists need to re-confirm what is already known about protecting personnel and assets as laboratories reopen. Scott Kreitlein, BHDP Client Leader, recently authored an article published in Labcompare offering recommendations for laboratory planning and operating practices. He discusses the physical ways to make labs safer as well as scientific considerations and training suggestions. Check it out.

The City Of Cincinnati Government was one of the first 10 founding members of the Cincinnati 2030 Districtan initiative of Green Umbrella. So, what is the Cincinnati 2030 District? Mount St. Joseph University's (MSJ) Centennial Field House will be complete this fall, so why not #ThrowbackThursday to the beginning of this project? The overarching strategy of MSJ's visionTransformation 2025" began with a letter sent to BHDP from Dr. James Williams in 2017. Over the next eight weeks, our team led visioning sessions and focus groups with students, faculty, staff, and Cincinnati community leaders to advance Transformation 2025 into a compelling and colle...ctive vision statement. One of the most expansive features in the recreation and fitness center is the indoor practice and training spacethe fieldhouseto accommodate several teams and many activities for the student population, including track and field, softball, baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. It will be surrounded by an indoor, 200-meter, six-lane running trackthe only indoor NCAA regulation-size track in the region. This facility highlights MSJ's commitment to the balanced development of body, mind, and spirit. For a glimpse of their future campus, check out this video.
