This is something we get lots of calls about, and there is some confusion on line about this when trying to hook up a pulse line for a fuel pump. The hole that comes factory on the valve covers on Honda, Clone, Ducar, Tillotson, Non Hemi Predator, Hemi Predators and comparable engines is a vent for the crank case. This is how wind created by the crank and internal parts gets out of the engine and should be vented to the atmosphere or a line should be run to a vented catch can.... Using this for a fuel pump pulse is not a good idea and will not work properly because their is very little if any vacuum from here. The proper way to pulse the fuel pump from the valve cover is to drill and tap the top area of the cover for a hose barb as shown in the last photo. This would be in the same area on most all valve covers for these 196, 200 and 212cc engines. For any further help or advise on how to do this you can view a how to on the blog via our ARC webpage or contact us directly at 800-521-3560 M-F from 7:30-4:30 est. See more

ARC Racing Live Q&A Session... 7PM est I will try, again I say TRY to do a Live session this Thursday evening, September 17th around 7PM. I have a lot of stuff going on at and outside the shop, but we need to get back on the air waves and back to communicating with our customer base. This week we will be discussing Torque specs and Torque wrenches along with why they are important to any type of build. So hopefully I can free up a little time to go live with you all and get back in a routine with our tech talks. The show will be an hour earlier than usual around 7PM est. See you then...

Due to recent OEM crankshaft shortages and changes in the Flathead limited modified engine rules, we will be producing more of the 6580-C Chromoly Billet cranks in order to meet the demand. These cranks are a direct replacement for the OEM Flathead cranks, are balanced and will be in production next week.

We have talked about this in our tech videos before, along with a post or two over the last few years. However, after a few calls and messages I think it's time for another post to bring some light on a little problem that can cause metal flakes to be present in your new engine even after several oil changes. It has to do with the crank shaft, mainly the crank journal. Now seasoned/veteran builders should already know about this and should be correcting this before assembly. ...It's the newer folks to the sport that may not know about this area of the build. That's why we are here. We have pictures with identification of a few cranks posted below that show the area causing this problem. It is a seam from the casting process that sometimes leaves a small burr or sharp area under the journal that can rub the rod and create the metal you sometimes see after a new build. If you notice from the pictures of the rods it usually only removes metal on the beam part of the rod, and not so much on the cap section. This is due to crank flex under a load or at higher RPMs during the end of the combustion or power stroke. All the flexing, twisting and forces on these parts during this action is a post for another day. We are here now to simply help you correct this and help the longevity of your engine. As you can see in the last photo we show a crank that has been "touched up" to remove the burr from this area. We use a Dremel with a small stone bit to carefully knock it down, then a buffer pad bit to polish it up. BE VERY CAREFUL not to hit the crank journal while doing this. We always do this prior to polishing the journal to set oil clearances "just in case". This is an easy task to perform that could help the life of your connecting rod and crank, because metal flakes in the oil will get passed through the oil hold in the rod and cause accelerated wear in the rod, the crank journal, if using a billet rod the rod bearings and the cylinder/rings. Now I will add that the rod and crank will always make contact while running, it has to in order to keep the rod inline with the piston. Again another post for another day. So you will always see an area on the side of any rod where it is slightly rubbing the crank, you just don't want it to actually cut metal particles off the rod as shown in the photos and disperse them though out the engine. For the ones building AKRA / NKA / WKA legal engines... We are not saying or endorsing this as legal to do under the current rules, nor are we encouraging you to do this to your engine. Some tech guys may let it go, some may not. If you do this and get caught, do not call us lol. We are posting this for people building their own mod engines for back yard karting or mini biking where rules are not a factor... Any further questions you may have on this can be sent via messenger, Email at [email protected] or our tech line at 800-521-3560

Every now and then we get a call from a customer, or see a post on line with people wondering why the Billet connecting rod they just bought has not been cut into on the cap. Well, it is impossible for any of our Billet connecting rods to leave this shop in one solid piece, because every rod we manufacture is made from two different pieces. We make the beam section, then we make the cap section. Once the machining process is so far along the two parts are joined together. The...n the rod bolts are installed, torqued to 150 inch/lbs and the finish machining process is completed on the connecting rod. The finishing process we use on our connecting rods (and all our parts) will leave the rod very smooth and very shinny. No we do not polish, buff or dip any of our parts, they come off the machine looking like that. It is because of this unique finishing process that the separation lines of the cap and beam most time can not be seen, giving people the idea that it is still one solid piece. You can just simply remove the rod bolts and pull the cap off the rod and the lines will be a little clearer. Some companies would look at this as a disgruntled customer, we look at it as a testament to the quality of work we put into each and every part we manufacture here at ARC Racing. See more
