Lets Talk Cue's; Checking for straightness: To play properly, a cue needs to be reasonably straight. Remember that cues are made of wood, an organic material, so don't expect perfect straightness, particularly in the shaft. Also be aware that a shaft or butt may have a compound taper, as opposed to a straight taper. A shaft or butt with a straight taper is shaped like a wedge It increases in diameter consistantly, i.e., in a straight line. A compound taper is essentally, two ...or more different straight tapers joined together.A shaft with a compound taper may grow in diameter very slowly through the first several inches and then grow much faster in diameter toward the joint. (Kulungian): Now keep in mind, we'er talking about something that's about five feet long, less than a half inch in diameter at one end and an inch and a half at the other, so it's not going to be perfect.
