The story of Paw Paw/ Mulberry Pie. Nadia, our Culinary genius made this wonderful pie from our frozen Paw Paw pulp and Mulberries.
It's that time of year.. Pawpaw ice cream is usually our go-to, but I think I'll make a couple pies to hold us over during potential power outages from the oncoming weather. Check out some of Kentucky State University's collected recipes and their Pawpaw breeding program
Please share with any flooded friends
Getting my FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) training on with Trefoil Gardens today. What an awesome group of people, knowledge, and food to share.. always continuing education and bettering practices
Great deal for this produce safety workshop. This is an approved FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) and PSR (Produce Safety Rule) training, for only $20. We did a 3 day HACCP/HARPC class at UGA 2 years ago to learn more on GAP (Good Agricultural Practices), but it's always good to improve practices and keep learning. Emily will be attending.
Stop by our farm to purchase some local honey, from our friend Bud! Just past the house after ours, pull down to the barn (just before the gardens). Sign is on the road. BEE LOCAL!
Look beyond the present
Our native perennial flowers are beautiful and adapted to the region, along with native pollinators. Check out a local native plant nursery for your flower beds/pollinator habitat. Remember every creature needs food, water, shelter, and space to reproduce: add puddling areas and watering holes, make a wood pile climbing with native vines. Support your ecosystem!
Aunt Rachel, Thompson Summer (?), and Sops of Wine. June/July ripeners, they could all use a tad more time. Michael is working on our inventory, mapping, and Spreadsheet today for the dwarf orchard while I study for the Master Gardener final exam. It's an office work weekend..
Wild blackberries cooked down with a little sugar make a yummy ice cube treat to add to our infused waters and mixed drinks . Freeze them in trays then vacuum seal or freezer bag
Dwarf apple orchard: 1yr leaf mulch, 2yrs sheet mulch (cardboard and wood chips), cover cropped in peas, getting ready for a round of buckwheat, weedy as hell regardless. 3D fence deer protection, daffodils and dogs for vole protection. We're also using kaolin clay for Japanese beetle protection and removing fire blight that appeared this year. This is High maintenance, ain't F-ing around.
Fig guilds are abundant, with our clover taking over we've cut our mowing back to just edging the guilds. A little more maintenance on the currants and interplanting yarrow, comfrey, etc. This violet de Bordeaux is making me blush
