April is Autism Awareness Month. Please check in to find out more about out Autism assessments and behavior planning.
Autism is challenging for the person with a diagnosis, and those close to them. Difficulties with social engagement can make it difficult to build relationships for some individuals. A tool that can help you or a child you care about is teaching them to learn 3 new things about a person during conversations. Encouraging them to ask for and remember details about others, while talking about their interests is a great way to help monitor if the necessary back and forth of conversation is taking place.

My Child Might Have Dyslexia, Now What? According to the International Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia is "a language-based learning disability" that can consist of deficits in spelling, writing, or speaking and impact academic performance. While scheduling an appointment with your pediatrician is a sensible first step, you may feel unsure of what is imperative to bring up or to ask. To start, write down a comprehensive list of the symptoms of concern your child is exhibiting ...as well as how long and how often they have been occurring. This will save time during the appointment and give your doctor a solid launching point. Some examples would be, difficulty learning letters or matching letters to sounds, and/or consistently low test scores. If your doctor feels there is a potential issue, he/she will likely refer you to a psychologist for comprehensive testing. If your child receives a diagnosis of Dyslexia, you should notify their school. This is not to label your child, but to allow the school and teachers to be aware that different learning method s may be more beneficial for your child. Also, it might be helpful to ask if your child's learning disability justifies an IEP (Individualized Education Program). While Dyslexia varies in severity, a diagnosis does not automatically mean your child will be unable to read, write, or speak. Early intervention is ideal and working with a specialized psychologist and your child's school will help to implement appropriate accommodations.
