The Bonaventure Historical Society is suspending Visitor Center operations until further notice due to the on-going threat of Coronavirus. We have many senior volunteers and their health is our primary concern. This means that the Historical Society’s volunteers will not be staffing the visitor center. Bonaventure Cemetery gates will remain open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM as usual. Visitors to the cemetery still have a number of options to tour the cemetery. Our tour app is ...a great way to tour the cemetery on your own. https://www.bonaventurehistorical.org/store/ Please follow our Facebook page for further updates.

Just a reminder: The Bonaventure Historical Society has suspended Visitor Center operations until further notice due to the on-going threat of Coronavirus. We have many senior volunteers and their health is our primary concern. This means that the Historical Society’s volunteers will not be staffing the visitor center and the free monthly tours are canceled.... Bonaventure Cemetery gates will remain open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM as usual. In the meantime, our Bonaventure Cemetery Tour app is a great tool to have when you do visit the cemetery. It’s full of stories of the people who now call Bonaventure home. The app may be downloaded from the following link. https://www.bonaventurehistorical.org/store/

Recently, we’ve been getting lots of questions about the azaleas so here’s an update for everyone. We’ve had an unusually warm Winter and that’s never good for the azalea bloom. It causes the plants to bloom at different times. So now we have some azaleas that are past their peak and others that haven’t even budded yet. But, still a good time to visit because many of our camellia bushes are still in bloom. We hope you enjoy these pictures of a couple of the bushes at their peak.

This afternoon, some of the BHS board members were treated to a crash lesson on camellias by Ron and Belinda Jacob, of the BHS Garden Club. As you can see lots of pictures were taken. Hopefully either Ron or Belinda will comment on the individual photos with the names of each plant.

All the hard work in planting and watering Bonaventure’s many camellias is finally paying off. Many thanks to all of Bonaventure’s volunteers, but special thanks must go out to the Camellia group. You guys go above and beyond, thanks so much.

We're happy to report that Hurricane Dorian caused very little damage in Bonaventure. The cemetery will re-open this morning at 8am, closing at 5pm. Adding a picture now, because posts with pictures get more views. The Baldwin Angel.

Your donations at work! The BHS is building a brick paver walkway in Colonial Garden. The garden is where everyone meets for our free monthly tours and it’s being given a much need facelift. Please consider joining the BHS and helping our mission.

Savannah's beloved Bird Girl is moving into her very own gallery at Telfair Academy! This exhibition, which opens next Friday, will connect visitors to the history of Bonaventure, from Mary Telfair’s visits to the cemetery in the 19th century to the present day.

We’ve been getting questions about the azaleas so here’s an update. A few are already blooming but most of them probably won’t be full for another month or so. Follow along here and we’ll keep you updated.

Before today’s free tour we took some time to photograph a few of the thousands of beautiful camellias blooming in the cemetery. Hope you enjoy.
