When planning your blueberry beds for a Fall plant order, remember that you need at least 2 varieties of blueberries (within the same group: Rabbiteye or Southern Highbush) for the best fruit set. Also, Rabbiteye bushes are planted 5 to 6 feet apart in the row with 12 feet between rows, and Southern Highbushes are planted 4 feet apart in the row with 10 feet between rows.

Here's a quick guide to help you with planning your row of blackberries: -Blackberries like a soil pH of 6.0-6.5 -Erect varieties are spaced 3 feet apart in the row, 10-12 feet between rows.... -Semi-erect/ Trailing varieties are spaced 6 feet apart in the row, same space between rows. -15 plants is enough to supply an average family of 4 with fresh berries and a few desserts.

Now is a great time to get a soil sample analysis of your existing garden or future garden area for Fall planting. Our Southern clay soil is naturally acidic and you will need to apply lime to raise the pH to a neutral level- this process can take several months. Also, lime doesn't move down into the soil with the rain, so you need to mix it into the soil. (Of course, if you are going to plant blueberry bushes this Fall- you won't need to apply lime to that area of your garden).
