On Friday, April 19th, 2019 the Council of South Carolina Professional Archaeologists hosted a day-long historic ceramic artifact workshop at South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources new Parker Archaeology Annex facility in Columbia. This hands-on workshop was led by Dr. Lindsey Bloch who serves as the Collections Manager for the Ceramic Technology Laboratory at the Florida Museum of Natural History. During the morning session, Dr. Bloch discussed various approaches to identify common ware types. The afternoon was spent examining ceramic assemblages brought in by participants, including artifacts from our recent Ashley Hall excavations. The event, sponsored by Brockington and Associates, was well attended by archaeologists and students from all over South Carolina, including Brockington’s Charleston lab manager Jeff Sherard.
