The Official Code of Georgia (OCGA) describes aggressive driving in 40-6-397. Aggressive driving is when any driver operates any motor vehicle with the intent to annoy, harass, molest, intimidate, injure, or obstruct another person. Specific violations listed in the code section include failure to give way, failure to maintain lane, following too closely, improper lane change, impeding traffic flow, operating a motorcycle between lanes, and reckless driving. #StopRoadRage #DriveSafeBrookhaven #TrafficTips

Remember when your momma told you to worry about yourself? She was on to something! Shouting, gesturing, honking, and tailgating other drivers does not make traffic move any faster and it increases the chances of a crash or conflict. Focus on being a safe driver and set an example for others. #StopRoadRage #DriveSafeBrookhaven #TrafficTips

BPD misses our local school visits!!! On Tuesday Sergeant Martinez, in the Community Engagement Unit, made a visit to Ashford Park Elementary School!!! Sergeant Martinez met with kids and school staff as BPD had done prior to COVID-19. While socially distanced and mask attire, Sergeant Martinez was able to check in on kids and staff whom he recognized from our visits in the past. Thank you, Sergeant Martinez, for taking time out of your day to bring a smile to Ashford P...ark Elementary School... even if it is behind the mask. #communitypolicing #BPD #BPDintheCommunity #inthistogether #BrookhavenStrong

It’s easy sometimes to forget that, at the start and end of every day, we’re all in this together. BPD has worked hard this week, and each day since we began operations in 2013, to earn and keep the trust of our public. This week we’ve given you extra insight into our department, and we’ll continue doing that on our webpage. And, as always, we hope you’ll continue to our engage us on social media, by email, on our website, and especially in person. The best way to learn more ...about our officers is by talking to them, and our officers are always ready to listen. Remember that we’re more than nameless, faceless uniforms. We’re husbands, daughters, fathers, mothers, and brothers. We come from every background, and all walks of life. We’re your Brookhaven P.D., and we'll be here when you need us. #WeAreBrookhavenPD #IamBrookhavenPD #BrookhavenTransparencyProject #BrookhavenPolice #BPDintheCommunity #CommunityPolicing #BPD #BrookhavenGeorgia #BrookhavenGA

The Brookhaven Police Department has long sought to bring a bit of humanity to our page by including humor, real-time story telling, even sarcasm. Today I bring you candor: BPD has a practice of posting only those police officer deaths which occur in and around metro-Atlanta. The truth is that if we posted them all it would overwhelm our page. Still, the death of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick brings the daily, routine sacrifice of your police officers to the fore...front of the American conscience. Officer Sicknick, like every police officer, was a human - a man with a family, hobbies, and dreams. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and service, as our fallen officers so typically do. We join the Capitol Police and Officer Sicknick's family -blood and blue- in mourning his line of duty death. Inscribed on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington, D.C. is the phrase, "It's not how these officers died that made them heroes; it is how they lived." The quote, inscribed when the wall was constructed in 1991, is attributed to Vivian Eney Cross, the wife of Sergeant Christopher Sherman Eney who was killed in a training accident in August 1984. Incidentally, Sergeant Eney was also a member of the U.S. Capitol Police. The words of his wife still ring profoundly true: police officers across this country, and right here in Brookhaven, remain committed to the rule of law, to service in our communities, and to the protection of the rights and safety of every person we meet. On this "Law Enforcement Appreciation" day we remember the sacrifice of Officer Sicknick, Sergeant Eney, recently killed DKPD Sergeant Daniel Mobley, and the other 22,267 law enforcement officers whose names are inscribed on the Memorial. And we share our sincere gratitude for the community support we have here in Brookhaven - support we believe we have earned, and aspire to grow and maintain every day, with every encounter. #SupportYourPolice #BPDintheCommunity #CommunityPolicing #BrookhavenGA #BrookhavenStrong #AmericaStrong #weareallinthistogether

Ohhhh the weather outside is frightful! sorry got caught up in the spirit of the season. Driving in the snow is not something that we deal with often around here. But we do get one or few snow days a year and we want you to know what to do if you have to go out in the cold. 1. DRIVE SMOOTHLY The key to safe driving in snow is being smooth with the steering wheel, accelerator, and brakes. Why? Jerky movements with the controls easily unstick tires that have a tenuous g...Continue reading

Brookhaven Police Canine Retires on 10th Birthday The Brookhaven Police Department today announced the retirement of one of their most beloved members. Canine Dano, who is celebrating his 10th Birthday today, was officially retired from the Brookhaven Police Department during a small ceremony on December 08, 2020. Uniquely, Dano a Belgian Malinois was bred by BPD Canine Officer John Ritch. He began serving Brookhaven in 2013 alongside then Officer David Fikes (Of...ficer Fikes has since been promoted to Sergeant). During his time as a BPD canine, Dano received certifications in narcotics detection, tracking, and criminal apprehension, and re-certified in each category every year. During his seven years of service, Dano assisted in the arrest of more than 150 violent offenders. As just one example, in 2016, Dano was responsible for locating a murder suspect just 28 minutes after the offense. That offender surrendered without incident, and was ultimately sentenced to life plus 140 years in prison. In addition to his criminal apprehensions, Dano was responsible for the seizure of nearly $697,000 in U.S. currency; and the value of the narcotics he intercepted is estimated at more than $4.7 million. When he wasn’t busy working, Dano was a rock star in the Brookhaven community. Always a sucker for a belly-rub or a hug, Dano was loving and affectionate towards members of the public of all ages, and he is by far still the most popular officer on our social media accounts. He was also a devoted partner to Sergeant Fikes, and a member of the Fikes family for his entire career. Dano will retire to live with Officer Ritch and his family. He will be sorely missed by his friends and coworkers, but we wish him all the belly-rubs and bones he can handle!
