In our bottega bakery today! Apple, pear, amaretto crumble cake. If it weren’t for the light amaretto cookie crumble on top, this beauty would be 100% vegan.

Saint Rosalia was born in Palermo to a noble family in 1130. Devoutly religious, she rejected the noble life and retired as a hermit in a cave on Palermo’s Mount Pellegrino where she died alone in 1166. Almost 500 years later, in 1624, a plague struck Palermo. Saint Rosalia appeared to a sick woman, then to a hunter. She told the hunter where her remains could be found and ordered him to bring them to Palermo, where they would be carried in procession throughout the city. Th...e hunter climbed the mountain and found her bones in the cave, exactly where she had told him to look. He brought them back to the city, where the people carried them in procession. After that, the plague ceased (we could use a little bit of Santa Rosalia’s light right now, right?! ). In gratitude for this miracle, the people of Palermo adopted her as their patron saint, and a sanctuary was built in the cave where her remains were discovered. Santa Rosalia, also known as La Santuzza and referred to as Rusulia in Sicilian dialect is celebrated every year on September 4th by walking barefoot from Palermo up to Mount Pellegrino. Today, at Buon Fornello, we observe and celebrate her honorable life. Viva Santa Rusulia! All credits respected.

Ferragosto comes from the Latin Feriae Augusti (the festivals of the Emperor Augustus) which were introduced back in 18 BC and were celebrated alongside other ancient Roman summer festivals. These festivities were linked to the longer Augustali period intended to be a period of rest after months of hard labour. In Roman times, the celebrations included horse races. The Siena Palio dell'Assunta, which usually takes place on August 16th, is an example of how these traditi...ons are kept alive. Today, the holiday also celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven the day when Catholics believe Mary ascended to heaven "body and soul" after the end of her life on earth. For almost all Italians, Ferragosto is seen as the culmination of summer vacation. This is the time to escape from work and plan a vacation at the beach or in the mountains. Major cities become ghost towns as residents flee with the same common goal: a bit of sun, good food, and plenty of relaxation. Sicily and its beaches are known to offer some of the best spots to celebrate Ferragosto! We highly recommend visiting during this festive time of the year.
