CCCA Student of the Week Spotlight March 1-5, 2021 Calhoun High School 11th grader, Astrid Barrios, is the Calhoun College and Career Academy (CCCA) Student of the Week for March 1-5, 2021. Astrid’s law and public safety teacher, Helen Hughey, nominated Astrid stating, Astrid is a wonderful student! She is always engaged in class discussions, has a thorough understanding of the content, and is able to apply her knowledge to real world problems. She is always respectful in cl...ass and never hesitates to assist her peers when needed. I love seeing Astrid's positive outlook and how she has grown academically the last two years. Astrid chose the law and public safety pathway because it has always fascinated her. She wants to work in a field that has a direct impact on helping others and her community. Astrid would like to pursue a degree in criminal justice after taking some time off to gain employment experience(s). She is undecided where she would like to attend college. Astrid aspires to have a career as a police officer and/or crime scene investigator. When asked about her thoughts on the law and public safety pathway, Astrid stated, The law and public safety pathway is a very experience-filled introduction for any student who is looking to go into the public safety and/or legal field. Mrs. Hughey does a good job getting her students involved in the class and learning hands-on material. I feel this pathway will prepare me for life after high school and a path to my career goals.

Students in Mrs. Bramblett and Mrs. Murphree‘s classes recently studied the solar system. Students completed a choice board that offered multiple ways to create a model of the solar system. Students could choose from making a brochure, baking, creating a solar system mobile, making a solar system hat along with several other choices. These students then presented their projects to the class. It was a great opportunity for the students to use their creativity while also learning more about the solar system. Pictured is Emily Perez Limones with her solar system.

Ms. McBrayer's third grade class recently learned the distributive property of multiplication. They all had the chance to perform "surgery" on multiplication problems and "slice" them into easier known facts. The students were suited up for "surgery" and the lesson was a fun way to visually show the distributive property. The students had a blast learning!
