We remember vividly the day this little boy joined our school some four and a half years ago. It was pretty clear by his love of stacking objects, his attention to detail and his inquisitive nature that he had an analytical and bright mind. He has been the engineer of his own learning for the last five years! When he was three years old, he was engaged in art projects every single day. When he was four he had excellent fine motor strength which helped him begin to manipulate... objects, engage in advanced patterning and delight in showing us how things fit together and could be also be pulled apart. He is an avid builder of remarkable structures. Some of his Lego systems are not only complicated but well thought out, planned and executed with intentionality. He has built a parking garage, a house, and one of the greatest things that he initiated was the Lego Beyblade. This Beyblade activity morphed into a learning opportunity that all of his peers participate in eagerly. These objects have turned into learning competitions and challenges including created sight word competitions, math challenges and much more. We continuously up the bar but they end up beating us every time! He is leaving us to go to elementary school well prepared. In fact, he has started learning how to divide! We have enjoyed watching this little boy grow into a learner who loves to explore, is curious, confident, resilient and takes risks. He is fortunate to have supportive parents that guide and support him in reaching his potential. We will miss seeing this beautiful boy every day and can’t wait to hear about all of his successes in elementary school. We will have to plan a summer camp that involves exploring quantum physics for this one. Congratulations! We will miss you more than you know. #learningthroughexperiences #progressiveeducation #learningshouldbefun #congrats See more

We were very saddened to learn that Sir Ken Robinson passed earlier this week. There would be no Cambridge School without the genius of Sir Ken. His inspiration and aspiration for a fundamental change in the way children should learn was the impetus for our school’s creation. We believe, now more than ever, that children are not being given appropriate learning environments and the damage will be catastrophic. Sir Ken, you will be missed. Seeing young children in front of screens for hours learning mind numbingly low level content is a sad reality in the time of #covid19 The great teachers of the world heard your call and will continue your work. Godspeed, Sir. #ripsirkenrobinson #sirkenrobinson #schoolskillcreativity #TedTalks #educationrevolution #hero #education

So proud of himself. He wanted me to see how he learned how to propel himself over the swing and land on his feet. This takes a lot of upper body strength and it’s a wonderful sign that he will continue to learn optimally. He’s just five years old and he can add double digit numbers. He learned all through play and mindful guidance. This swing represents a learning vehicle that children need. Yet swings are being taken out of early childhood environments. Why? Our children li...terally do all foundational learning by moving their bodies. Many early learning centers don’t understand that connection well. Some believe that children are born a blank slate that needs to be filled with information. These places think that children need to learn about the solar system or the difference between an invertebrate and invertebrate. That’s memorization. Great schools help children learn how to create, how to question, to wonder, to dream, to plan, to problem solve, to debate, to show compassion, to speak up for themselves, to value books and have a solid foundation in phonics, to love the process of learning. So many kids come to us from other schools lacking the fundamentals. They can’t use writing implements or engage in complex imaginary play. This tells us that have been dictated to, they were not given tools to learn independence, that they were forced to sit still and be quiet and then got in trouble for doing the very thing their body needs - movement!. Children need specific environments in which to grow and learn -ones that honor them as a human being with rights. Most of the time even the teachers aren’t paid a living wage, don’t get enough training on the body-mind connection. Half the time the teachers aren’t allowed to deviate from a schedule that may not make sense or to deviate from a lesson plan that no one is interested in. Do you know what that sounds like? That sounds like prison. If a child has not exercised their creativity muscle before the age of six it may be too late. #amovingchildisalearningchild #learningisnotallinyourhead #carlahannaford #braingym #howleaderslearn #raepica #drjean @ The Cambridge International School at Buckhead See more
