Today I had the pleasure of working with The University of West Georgia’s Black Alumni Network @uwgblackalumnetwork for their March theme of Health & Wellness to create an authentic and genuine conversation around Self-Care and Burnout. I wanted to share my conversation with you all about what self-care means to me, how to create self-care that meets our physical, mental, or emotional needs, and tips on how to build a consistent self-care regimen into your routine. Thanks again for having me! . #therapeuticthursday #healthandwellness #uwg #march #candortherapycare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth

It’s going to be hard, but you must trust yourself to do the work to achieve the goals you’ve set out for yourself. This is something that I make a priority of saying during all my intake sessions with new clients. Most clients are unsure of what I mean by that until after a few sessions. . It’s possible to believe that most, if not all of the positive change and growth that you seek, or the goals you desire strongly to achieve occur in therapy. After all, that’s why m...ost people seek out therapy is to change, grow, and evolve as a person. Truth is, only a portion of this change and work is done in therapy and the rest is done outside of the room. . If you’ve ever heard a therapist mention doing the work outside of session, this is what they mean. In my opinion, therapy is a space to do a lot of processing work with emotions, past trauma, life transitions, effects of mental health disorders, etc. Once you begin to process some of the things you’ve come to therapy for, or even some new things your therapist has brought to your attention, it is then your job continue processing and exploring by doing things like self-reflection, journaling, or taking on new coping skills or completing homework that might’ve been discussed in session and applying these skills or new information to your every day life to see if you benefit in any way. . Your therapist and weekly or bi-weekly 50-minute sessions can only do so much for you when it comes to seeking change. We are here for support and it’s our job to guide you through this process of change, however if you want that change to be long-term, you must put the work in outside the room. It can be hard, but once you take the time and responsibility to commit to doing it, you’ll truly see the benefits and life-changing things that can occur inside the therapy room. What do you think doing work outside of therapy would look like for you? Be Well See more

Today I want to check-in with our mental health by providing another list of things to serve as reminders of things we don’t need to be apologizing for, even if others try to make us feel bad for doing them. I especially want to focus on the first one. . We might’ve formed a habit of apologizing immediately after showing some type of emotion like crying or being vulnerable thinking that we’re protecting others or making the situation less uncomfortable for them when in... reality we’re minimizing and dismissing ourselves and our feelings. Anyone you choose to open up to or be vulnerable in front of should be honored to bear witness and should really be appreciative. . Yes we might feel some guilt completing some of these actions intentionally or not, which might cause us to apologize by habit, but do we really need to be sorry for being human and expressing ourselves genuinely in the moment? For prioritizing our self-care and being kind enough to let others who might be impacted know? Do we need to be sorry for ranking priorities based off of where we’re at in life or naming something that isn’t a priority to focus on what’s important to us? Or for moving forward with decisions that we’re happy with despite what others might have to say? Absolutely not. Continue to check in with yourselves mentally and emotionally as we transition into a new season and have a great week! . #mondaymentalhealthcheckin #checkingin #dontapologize #candortherapycare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth #therapyiscool #mft #atlantatherapist #therapistsofinstagram #millennialtherapist #yourfavoriteblacktherapist #authenticity #honesty #genuine #erasethementalhealthstigma #transparency #healthiswealth #growth #change #healing See more

How does that overrated saying go? Diamonds are made under pressure. So much pressure we experience externally and from our environment to feel a certain way, look a certain way, be a certain way, accomplish something by a certain age, it’s all just too much. But what about the pressure we put on ourselves to do possibly do these things? . We all know that we’re not perfect and that there’s no such thing, but often times we stress ourselves out so much by expecting our...selves to over achieve and put so much extra pressure on ourselves intentionally or unintentionally that it can lead to things like burnout, depression, anxiety, and so much more. Take some time to explore and self-reflect on what you tend to put extra pressure on yourself for and why because WE ALL DO IT! Is it pressure to perform a certain way at work? To be the best partner, parent, or student? To have a certain income or have a wedding ring by a certain age? We all want to work hard to achieve the goals we have set out for ourselves, but how can we enjoy them if we’re too burnt out stressed to do so? Have a great week! . #selfreflectionsunday #journal #selfreflect #meditation #pressure #candortherapycare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth #therapyiscool #mft #atlantatherapist #therapistsofinstagram #millennialtherapist #yourfavoriteblacktherapist #authenticity #honesty #genuine #erasethementalhealthstigma #transparency #healthiswealth #growth #change #healing See more

Happy Friday Y’all! I wanted to end the week sharing some of the many benefits of Me Time. Spending time alone with ourselves has so many great benefits for our health, especially our mental health. Studies even show that it can increase overall positivity, happiness, gratitude, and empathy. . Prioritizing my Me Time as an adult has allowed me the opportunity to increase my self-awareness because of how much I’ve grown to learn myself over the years. I’m able to identify... and process my emotions better and recognize quicker when something is feeling off with myself. . If you find yourself showing some symptoms of burnout like irritability or low motivation, or experiencing higher amounts of anxiety and stress, your body and mind might be telling you that it’s time to recharge by spending some time alone, possibly doing some sort of self-care. We live crazy lives trying to maintain a social life and keeping up with work, families, and relationships, you deserve and need to take time for yourself as often as you can. Before the month is over, I encourage you to be intentional about your me time by carving out some time to plan a date with yourself, take yourself out for brunch, take a relaxing bath, or read a book. Whatever it is that you do, make sure that you’re treating yourself well in the process. Have a great weekend! . #weekendthoughts #benefitsofmetime #tips #metime #candortherapycare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth #therapyiscool #mft #atlantatherapist #therapistsofinstagram #millennialtherapist #yourfavoriteblacktherapist #authenticity #honesty #genuine #erasethementalhealthstigma #transparency #healthiswealth #growth #change #healing See more
