The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia has entered a Ninth Amendment to General Order 20-01 that extends the suspension of jury trials through and including February 28, 2021 due to COVID-19 but allows for grand jurors to continue to be summoned and for grand jury proceedings to continue to be held. The amendment also allows prospective petit jurors to be summoned for trials scheduled to begin after February 28, 2021. May we never forget our history: 1788: Founding fathers establish the Electoral College. 1866: 14th Amendment grants men age 21 and over right to vote.... 1869: 15th Amendment grants all men the right to vote, regardless of race. 1920: 19th Amendment grants women right to vote. 1964: 24th Amendment bans poll taxes (required fees for voting). 1965: Voting Rights Act signed by President Lyndon Johnson. Enforces the 15th Amendment specifically declaring that obstacles including literacy tests or complicated ballot instructions are against federal law. 1971: 26th Amendment lowers voting age from 21 to 18. 2000: Bush v. Gore. Al Gore wins the popular vote. George W. Bush lead the Electoral College count. Numbers were too close to call, hanging chads. Al Gore requests a recount. The recount must be done by the state's deadline to cast their Electoral College vote, so the Florida Supreme Court votes to extend the deadline. The U.S. Supreme Court suspends the recount and enforces Florida's deadline. George W. Bush is declared President-elect on December 13, more than one month after the November 4 election. For the first time in United States history, our President is chosen based on a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. VOTE!!
