Here’s a common recycling mistake people make: bagging their recyclables and then placing that bag in the recycling bin. The problem? When you bag recyclables, ...the automated equipment at the MRF (materials recovery facility) can’t identify and sort the recyclables properly. Instead, the machines identify the bag as filled with garbage and your recyclables get diverted to the landfill. So, if you have a bag of recyclables, take that bag to the bin, turn it upside down, and dump your recyclables into the bin! #IfInDoubtThrowItOut #EndContamination #Recycling See more

Robert Bob Heider was a City of Columbus Georgia employee for over 20 years, working as a supervisor in several different job areas. Bob came to the Columbus Recycling Center as the Line Supervisor in 2013, when the facility opened. The facility was new, as was the single stream sort line. Bob was instrumental in getting the program operational, as we all learned new task and large challenges we had not faced before. Bob’s tremendous leadership abilities helped the facilit...y to grow quickly in tonnage processed, and managing more workers as the workforce was increased. Bob had the ability to foresee obstacles far ahead in scheduling, often solving issues before they could arise. Bob was in charge of the production line, the vehicle maintenance, worker issues and sort line problem solving. Bob was a loyal employee, one you knew would get the mission accomplished. It is with reverence I nominate Bob, as he passed away in May of 2020. His presence is greatly missed at the work site, as is his wisdom of so many lively topics at the break room table. Bob is often spoken of by the employees with the fond memories that bring a smile to everyone’s faces, and he is much deserving of recognition for his work. Rhonda Harden began employment at the Columbus Recycling Center in November of 2014, and quickly became a valuable asset. Rhonda instituted new policies for Scalehouse operations and training of the operators. She was given responsibility of the supply room that keeps the facility running, and due to her foresight to keep sanitizing materials well stocked, the pandemic deep cleaning tasks were easier to accomplish without shortages. Rhonda is one of two supervisors who have ...responsibility of up to 50 workers on a single shift, and the entire production floor. She schedules important training and events, keeps track of our tonnage production and holds safety meetings. Rhonda addresses issues at the facility, both personal and organizational every day, and if called upon during her off time. Rhonda was forced to step up recently, due to the unfortunate passing of Robert Heider, the other Recycle Center Supervisor. During our time of grief, Rhonda took Robert’s responsibilities onto her own shoulders, and did an excellent job of keeping the facility running and in order. As she has been doing for the last 34 years as a City of Columbus Georgia, Rhonda proved to be an dependable employee when things are challenging, and I feel she deserves recognition for her hard work and perseverance. Joe kunze has worked for the City of Columbus since 2012 and has been a godsend for the construction and daily operations of all of our disposal facilities. Joe has almost fifty years of experience in operating heavy equipment in the construction industry where he became an expert finish man. He brings a level of attention to detail that is evident in all of the work and projects he completes. Joe’s motto is to be on time is to be late and to be early is to be on time and never calls out. Joe has brought a level of workmanship to the division that is a rare find in the municipal side of the industry. We could all take a page out of the Joe Kunze Autobiography for honesty, hard work, and grade stakes. #Essential 2020 SWANA-Georgia Chapter Waste & Recycling Workers Week
