Several Douglas Ladies started a City Improvement Club which later became the Douglas Woman's Club and for almost 100 years were actively involved in the betterment of Douglas.
The Coffee County Historical Society placed a sign on GWC Campus commemorating the last remaining Rosenwald School in Coffee County. Those attending were Oscar ...Street, Abe Morris and Tonya LeSure from GWC, relatives of Billy Paulk who donated land for the Paulk school, Irene Murray, Mayor Tony Paulk, Dr. Morris Leis and Carol Morgan, president of the Historical Society. Douglas Peanut and Storage company was started in 1947 by Henry Milhollin of Douglas, Ralph Paulk of Ambrose and Pleman Parrish of Moultrie. Located on corner of Baker Hwy and Manilla Ave. The partnership was incorporated in 1959. It served farmers of Coffee and surrounding counties with product and services for peanuts, corn and soybeans. In the 1980s it was purchased by Ralph Evans. This painting by Glenda Daniels was donated to the museum by Curtis Farrar.
Effective immediately, customers are required to wear face coverings to enter all municipal offices operated by the City of Douglas. Heritage Station Museum will reopen July 9th. Hours will be Thursdays 10am to 4pm, Fridays 10am to 1pm and Saturdays 10am to 1pm. There will not be History at High Noon in July.

Douglas Paved Roads, 1920 A paved road was made of cement and crushed stone. The following areas were 'paved'. Madison Ave - from Sycamore (now Ashley) to Ward St... Peterson Ave from Hunter St to Sellers St Ward St from Elk Ave to Pearl Ave Sycamore from Tanner Ave to Madison FYI a block of Tanner St was closed off when additions were made to the Courthouse.
Douglas. 1920 Douglas Fire Dept. consisted of 12 volunteers and a 'paid chauffeur'. The chauffeur was paid by the city by # of fire calls. They had 2 extension ladders and a 25' hose on a reel. There was 1 40 gallon chemical tank. The fire alarm in Douglas could be heard within a 1 mile circle of the courthouse. There was also land-line notification. How times have changed!
We hope to reopen in June. Here's historical trivia while you wait. 1920- Douglas had 2 artesian wells with gravity and pumping service; there was a 12000 gal reservoir and water pipes were laid in 1903. Douglas' average water consumption we 2,121 gal. More to tomorrow.
