CARNEGHAN BLACK HISTORY A LIVING HISTORY by EUGENE CUTHBERT Eugene Cuthbert, an Air Force Veteran, was born November 22, 1933 to Eva and Herbert Cuthbert. Today, Eugene is the oldest man living in Carneghan, Georgia. ... He entered the United Air Force in 1951 at the age of 17 and served 25 years. While serving, Eugene reached the rank of Technical Sergeant. He had the privilege of meeting some of the Tuskegee Airmen including Chapple James, the first African American to reach the rank of Four-Star General in the United States Armed Forces. While in the military. Eugene endured many instances of racism. However, in 1947 President Truman desegregated the military. Relationships between military men began to improve. As a result, his endurance, leadership and encouragement set examples for his four brothers to enlist in the military.
