A "short" story from Matthew "The Maestro" Mayo. On this date, 21 years ago... Wednesday, November 17, 1999.... This was the day I hosted my first karaoke show as an employee of Centerstage Entertainment Company. My first Centerstage show was at Bonz Sports Grill in Smyrna (now it's a Kroger LOL). I was brought into the company by Suzanne Gleeson, then the general manager of an entertainment company owned by Terry (TJ) Johnson, to later take on the role, briefly, of regional manager of the northern side of Atlanta. At our peak, Centerstage had over 50 karaoke shows and over 20 trivia shows each week, with upwards of 20 employees. We even had shows in Las Vegas. I, myself, at one time, had 7 shows a week. There was a "break" for several years while I took some time to get my act together, but I'm celebrating 21 years working for my great friend and fellow a**hole, TJ. Amazingly, TJ and I have put up with each other for well over two decades now. When we met, I was 30. He was 53. Now, I'm 51, and he is 74. He has been my karaoke boss. One of my mentors. Several swift kicks in my a**. Sometimes a complete PAIN in my a** . A second (or maybe third) dad. And, most importantly, my FRIEND. He even tapped ME to DJ his wedding a few years ago. What an honor. TJ, thank you. You gave me a second chance when nobody else would. We have seen some sh*t over the years, but I wouldn't change anything. In the last 21 years, working for you, I have met so many incredible people that I now call friends... even FAMILY. All because you believed in me (thanks to some "gentle" nudges from Suzanne). I even have folks who knew me as a Centerstage host way back then who found me later as a Centerstage host, and we reconnected after 20 years. And, thanks to you and Suzanne, I am better. Some people say I'm ok at this. That is a testament to the opportunity, training and experience that I gained working for you. It's been one hell of a run, my friend. And we're not done yet. It has been, and continues to be, a pleasure to work for Atlanta's premier entertainment organization, and for you. Thank you, my friend. I love you, dude. ~Matthew #CenterstageEntertainment
