The #kindergarteners went to #azaleapark to do #tashlich - the custom of casting our sins in the water. On the first day of Rosh Hashana (or any day between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur) we walk to a body of water with fish and say prayers and shake the corners of our garments, symbolically shaking our sins into the water. Why do we throw away our sins and why give them to the fish? During the month of Elul we do teshuva, we truly repent. We re...gret the bad choices we’ve made and commit to a better future. Often, when the reality of our choices sinks in and we see the damage our sins have caused, we can get weighed down by them. We become ashamed, hold on to the guilt and get stuck in our regret and introspection. On the first day of the new year we are given the opportunity to free ourselves of the weight of guilt and shame through Tashlich. It’s a new year and time to take our first steps forward; enough with wallowing in the past. Yet, The sins do not disappear. We throw them to the fish. Fish who have no eyelids and so see always. The sins cannot be completely forgotten lest we forget so much that we repeat them. So we cast them to the fish who are always alert, reminding us that while our pasts sins should never weigh us down and prevent us from confidently moving forward; our sins can never be completely forgotten either, the fish are holding them as a reminder as we move forward so we don’t foolishly take a few steps back. #teshuva #jewishpreschool #montessori #jewishmontessori See more
