A pioneer in her field, Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville became the second African-American woman in U.S. history to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics, after Euphemia Lofton Haynes. In 1956, Granville was hired as an #IBM contractor to #NASA, where she analyzed orbits and developed computer procedures for the Project Vanguard and Project Mercury space programs. She would later work on NASA’s Apollo program before returning to IBM as a senior mathematician. Here at the museum, we have man...y historic artifacts from the Project Mercury space program in our Tribute to Apollo 11 exhibit. A few of our favorites are: o The model of the Project Mercury Friendship 7 capsule, in which John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. o The Project Mercury Capsule Flight Operations Manual When asked about her experience as a young woman interested in mathematics, Boyd responded It never occurred to me that I could not do mathematics. Her determination and confidence led to a ground-breaking career that was truly out of this world! Today, organizations focused on diversity and supporting women in tech like Black Girls CODE, Girls in Tech, TechWomen, and Girls Who Code continue the vital work of encouraging young women of all colors to foster their interest in mathematics and tech, so they too might reach for the stars. A gaming technology pioneer, Gerald A. Jerry Lawson, played an integral part in creating the Fairchild Channel F video game system as the Director of Engineering and Marketing for Fairchild Semiconductor. The Channel F was the first cartridge-based home video game console and the first console to use a microprocessor, the Fairchild F8. Released in 1976, this console became the precursor to future systems such as Atari, Nintendo, and Xbox. Channel F was short for Channel ...Fun. In the 1970s, Jerry Lawson was one of few Black engineers in his industry. He joined Silicon Valley's Homebrew Computer Club, where he was the only Black member at that time. Today, the work of inclusion and diversification in the tech industry continues through organizations like Code2040. #jerrylawson #fairchildchannelf #BlackHistoryMonth #channelfun #techhistory #fromthecollection #cmoacollection #cmoa #retrogaming #gaminghistory

I think it is a critical place for our youth to learn about why and how we got to where we are in the world of technology Jonathon Zufi, author and technologist https://buff.ly/3eiyCZX #GivingTuesday #Testimonial #Testimonails

As a #nonprofit, donations of all types help us to forward our mission to empower, inspire, and educate. We are very grateful to Rocket Software for their generous donation of several large screen TVs and a projector. Thank you, Joseph Fraser, Vice President of Technical Support at Rocket Software (and CMoA member) for personally delivering these items. Elaine Pelaia, CMOA's Operations Manager was happy to help set up the delivery. We will certainly put this donation to good use at the museum! #CMoA #RocketSoftware #nonprofits
