Powell Promoted To Assistant Wrestling Coach LEAVENWORTH, Kan. University of Saint Mary head wrestling coach Chuck Kearney announced the promotion of Christy Powell, to assistant coach today. Powell has served as a graduate assistant the last two years, while helping lead the women's wrestling program.... "We are excited to announce the hiring of Coach Powell," Kearney said. "Christy has developed a reputation of a tireless recruiter and has been responsible for two of the nation's best recruiting classes." Her responsibilities are to continue to coordinate the University of Saint Mary recruiting efforts as well as coaching the teams under the direction of Kearney. Powell's collegiate career is impressive athletically. Powell a WCWA All-American and a two-time NCWA Academic All-American, also swept all the Missouri Valley College's internal awards by winning the Outstanding Freshman (2014), Most Inspirational (2015), Coaches Award (2016), team captain in both 2016 and 2017, and finally was named the Most Valuable Wrestler her senior year. On the senior level, Christy was a 2016 Senior National Women's Freestyle championship (4th at 53kg) and a 2017 Asics US Open Senior Women's Freestyle World Team Trials, US World Team Trial Qualifier, as well as, Olympic Trials Qualifier runner-up, and Olympic trials participant in 2016. Christy's accomplishments are equally impressive academically. The two-time Academic All-American graduated Magna Cum Laude from Missouri Valley College, before going on to earn her master's degree from University of Saint Mary in Teacher Leadership. As a prep, Powell won three State Folkstyle Championships, as well as being a USAW Girls Folkstyle All-American. She was a three-year starter and letter winner on the boys' team while representing Hillgrove High School. Kearney said Powell is one of the rising stars in the wrestling coaching ranks. "Christy is one of the next generation of coaches that will help lead women's wrestling and our program to new heights."
